Snapdragon X Elite is Qualcomm's latest ARM-based chipset for laptops

x86 emulation would be still pathetic at best. windows on arm is a joke anyway. ubuntu or any linux distro would work better on arm laptops.

Seems promising, but it's also interesting that they never compared the power consumption figure of SD X Elite against Apple's M2 when they talked about their respective peak performance (like they did for Intel and AMD chips).

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2023well, M3 is coming tooThis is already 13.5% better than M2 max in single thread performance.
M1 max to M2 max jump was 9-10% and M2 max to M3 max will be same. which is still 1-2% less than this.

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2023It will be good when microsoft will make custom chip just l... moreNo it won't. It's not chip that's the problem, it's Microsoft. They just can't seem to be able to do anything for ARM. For example, Apple made sure to have great translation layer for transition so even non native apps ran with minimal performance loss. With Microsoft, the losses were so huge it was pretty much unusable.

It has 50% more cores than M2 so I guess this tracks. Thread count is my biggest problem with the Apple Arm offerings.

Mediatek sux, 25 Oct 2023Interesting. So the 8 gen 3 might have more tflops but only... moreI have no clue if Adreno 750 is new Gpu or overclocked 740, but if we go by Qualcomm numbers 25% faster gpu and assume Tflop scale with that boost 3.5 x 25% is around 4.3 Tflop. Up there with best IGP in market.

playForever, 25 Oct 2023Qualcomm has much more experience than Nvidia in consumer p... moreNicely said BUT you're forgetting key components.
Intel over a decade ago had a chance to come correct when hitting their 3rd gen Core-i overheating thresholds. They already made their mistake stuck on theri legacy Wnidows code support licking that frozen pole (x86 cpu). They failed with the original Arm-based XScale chips for Windows PocketPC Phone Edition which I'm sure many executives still felt sour about it.
Qualcomm has a huge deal with Microsoft since early 2022 with the Surface X launch. Now they have the DevekopersKit from late fall 2022 and with top 4 former Apple SoC Apple Silicon OG engineers that left, created their own company Aira (is the name?) and purchased with staff coming over to Qualcomm! Just October last year Qualcomm CEO challenged Apple.

"
Qualcomm’s new ambitions are fueled by the daring visions of its new CEO Cristiano Amon, who revealed in a recent Reuters interview that he is ready to challenge Apple’s supremacy with the help of the chip architects at Nuvia. In this regard, Qualcomm aims at designing its own processors, without having to rely on longtime partner ARM too much. Nuvia was founded by ex-Apple chip architects that previously helped design the Apple M1 chips, so Qualcomm is certainly getting valuable know-how out of its recent acquisition
Just over 1yr from acquisition and they've surpassed Apple's 2nd generation chip!
Intel's 13th generation and you still think Intel hasn't made a mistake yet?!
Microsft CEO already stated last fall ... all future Microsoft Windows OS will be made as a priority for Arm and then RISC-V SoC/Chips.

Qualcomm has much more experience than Nvidia in consumer product market.
If ARM based chip can take some PC market share, probably Qualcomm chip has more chance. I would say ARM chip is only for tablet or phone market, it will take years to gain Windows laptop/desktop market shares due to software compatibility issue. As long as Intel does not make further big mistake, it would be very tough for Qualcomm/Nvidia to compete.
Apple M1/M2/M3 chip is a different story because consumers are willing to pay higher price for Apple laptops. For windows laptops that use ARM based chip, it has to be cheaper and more powerful than x86. Can Qualcomm/Nvidia achieve that.

as for the arm itself - having used mbp with m1 I'm looking forward to "PC" market with that architecture - no fans and completely silent and cool laptop is just amazing... and having long battery life is just another plus.
Though, I would probably go with some Linux distro ;-)
