Xiaomi phones with unlocked bootloader won't get HyperOS updates

08 November 2023
Xiaomi is also making the unlock process much more difficult.

MRSTEK, 09 Nov 2023Why this could be a piece of news? This is normal procedure... morebecause those who unlocked it didn't get HyperOS, but how many people unlocked it? maybe only 1%.

WTF xiaomi?! this is gonna ruin their business

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2023Why are brands so against you taking control of your own phone? So you can't switch to custom ROM when your phone "slows down" (aka being slowed down purposefully) from the software update and you must buy their latest one to fix the issue.

Since Xiaomi phones are now given quite a long update, even $100 phones, why unlock the bootloader for custom ROM?

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2023Phone companies: We are locking down our phones for securit... moreWell, it depends. An unlocked bootloader phone running a custom rom can be secure, but it needs to be done properly, or have it's bootloader re-locked after the custom rom is flashed. If someone doesn't know what they're doing and just blindly follows some tutorial online, they could increase the risk of damage if they were to unknowingly install a malicious app. Meanwhile, the manufacturer locking the bootloader does prevent potential malware installed by less computer literate users from having full root access (basically Admin access) on the device, and often on newer phones, the phone's built in anti-malware tool provided by the manufacturer would detect and block the installation or warn the user. There are ways to get still use banking apps and such on a device with an unlocked bootloader, such as using Magisk, but it isn't as smooth sailing as on a locked device (or as secure for that matter). That being said, as an enthusiast, I am not too happy about this. One of the main reasons I liked xiaomi's phones was the official and easier ability to root them compared to other manufacturers.

If MIUI wasn't so horribly unoptimized, users would be less inclined to unlock their phones. Get your sh*t together Xiaomi

Modders: We are modding our phones for security reasons.

I get confused over which phones are more secure, the locked bootloader phones or the unlocked bootloader phones. I can understand the debloating aspects of modding but, as far as I know, custom roms do not pass Safety Net/Play Integrity safeguarding banking apps.

I never cared for MIUI, nor will I care now for HyperOS.

Lister, 08 Nov 2023I've never used MIUI but I've heard good things. ... moreIt still is a thing. Top favorite was Google with GrapheneOS but it is limited to pixel hardware. And LineageOS still chugs on except they don't get as much newer devices compared to unofficial cfws from XDA.
Handed down a samsung note 3 to a relative but Google messed up official Youtube and Brave wasn't Android 5 compatible. So I put Android 11 on a 2013 phone and made it run Revanced YT. Also became super smooth with Google and Samsung bloat.

i only unlock my bootloader once my phone stops getting new OS updates so its fine. this doesnt change anything. You can always flash the latest stock ROM with unlocked bootloader anyway.
