The overall design will still be clearly identifiable.

Let's hope for the anti-reflective gorilla amor glass

Would be great if they settle on 18:9/2:1 aspect ratio, phones are getting too narrow and it benefits nobody.
Don't come at me with one handed use, you're not reaching neither the edge nor the corner of your current (modern phone). It's stupid couse no video aspect sits native and playing games is a nightmare as you lose all the vertical fov in ahooting games. Which is why playing on tabs feels like cheating. Hell I'd be happy with 18.5:9 to meet in the middle. No taller/narrower though. Please!!!!

If they keep the headphone jack and microSD card slot while improving the software support, then it will be my next device!

Well finally, I mean it's 2024 who the f would think tall aspect ratio makes sense on a cell phone?!

Doesn't sound like sony

I think that's a bad move. The 4K was a good future proof concept, especially with smartphone VR becoming a thing again, stick it in a box and it works. The Apple Vision Pro is bringing attention back to the VR landscape. If it does become a thing, would be worth having backwards compatibility on devices for last few generations to bring more audience to the tool. Heck I assume people would pay extra for certain VR applications (in the playstore - which Sony could develop). And given it's Sony, there is a lot of room for creativity in that space. The 21:9 is a nice to have and set's the brand aside. Also makes feasible room for a foldable/ rollable device future, as those types of devices have similar ratios.

Bravosixgoingdark, 15 Mar 2024What the hell 21:9 was excellent for gaming and reading con... moreIndeed. Most of the films are mastered for an approximate 21:9 ratio and Xperia devices give you the maximum screen area to watch such content. 4K is a gimmick though but 21:9 is one hell of a boon for cinemagoers.

Hope Sony will truly give up the gimmicks of 4k resolution and ultra tall aspect ratio. Plus extending the support offered and I might consider buying or recommending Sony phone again.

I mean it wasn't 4K to begin with so...

Also if this means it can actually run the display at more than barely FHD outside of some video apps and we get LTPO I see this as an absolute win, a shorter phone would move the center of gravity lower and the majority of content that people are watching is 18:9 anyway (if you only watch films this would probably kind of suck, but 21:9 on YouTube is vanishingly rate compared to 18:9 and 16:9).

"since every other flagship device that sells better than the Xperia line doesn't have a 4K screen and no one cares"

They are also widely available. I would consider an Xperia if it's locally available. I like to support them for not removing features that other phones have lacked for quite a while now. But I would buy a phone that's available than one that's not.
