Sony Xperia 1 VI might give up on the 4K display and tall aspect ratio

15 March 2024
The overall design will still be clearly identifiable.

YUKI93, 16 Mar 2024Did you know that the most selling Android phone in 2023 is... moreThats because you have small circle of friends, and thats okay.
I also dont have friend who uses Xperia, but thats because number of Sony phone user in real world is close to zero.

Sony will be a niche phone no matter what. Dropping 4k and 21:9 won't increase the customer base.

Price drops, better OS support and selling in more markets might help.

I have the Xperia 10iii and love the 21:9 and design. It's also very fast and with Nova Launcher 8 it's very fluid.

The cameras are good but not as great as I'd hoped considering they typically position themselves as photographers phones. That seems to be reserved for the expensive phones.

Given that they make the lenses they have a chance to position themselves as phones with great cameras when at the budget and mid level and that might generate sales.

The big problem with the budget and mid range is poor cameras. The 2a is trying to change that but e what's needed is Samsung s series level photography but at budget and mid market prices.

People really want that but keep being disappointed. Only Samsung A34/A55 kind of gives a decent experience but better is needed.

I feel like Sony could do well there if it manages to get S series/iPhone quality photos on those prices.

this is a good move, if they keep the 3.5mm and put in their best cmos for main [wide] cam for a change at least then this will be an option again.

No differences. People still wont buy it. Cannot sell using that format before, try to make a change with 4k & tall display, still no one buy it, now back to the previous format? I feel just stick with 4k (not all the time anyway) & tall display unique to Sony.

        😖

I do hope Sony keeps their mind about the design.
But xoeria 5 V cracked the door that they are eyeing mainstream designs (5 V not being shrunken down 1V)
Next up they'll introduce holepunch selfie as well. Mobile phones are getting boring now that every manufacturer keeps focusing on the cameras.

Samsung might he ahead of Sony, but there's no guarantee that it all comes from flagship models. Even within my circle, I have Japanese friends who use iPhone or Pixel or Xperia, but no Galaxy.

Oh no, I hope not. I want that format. It's perfect for filming and watching movies in the original format.
6.5" is just okay. Could be a big bigge though. I'm afraid of scaling back since I use a 6.78" phone right now.

TBH Sony should've only added 4k to the Sony Xperia Pro's (OG and the I) and the initial Sony Xperia 1. Hopefully though, sony can make a change and add a dedicated DAC/AMP setup to something LG has been doing with their V series, RIP! It'll go nice to with their push of adding their alpha line into the smartphone space as well.

Sony cant force apps like Chrome, Instagram, Gsmarena to run beyond 1080p.

I don't think a significant design change will come until 2025, and even if Sony decides to give up the tall aspect ratio in 2025, it won't make sense to make it wider rather then just shorter.

The 5 series would probably benefit even more from going 19.5:9 instead of 21:9. It should, in theory, make the body shorter and thus, more/truly compact while giving the screen some additional and very useful width. No taller than ~148 mm and no wider than ~70 mm--I would buy one to eventually replace my Zenfone 8. Could be a good commercial move as well if Asus actually gives up on the compact Zenfones.

I for one surely do care that Xperias still offer 4K display models and always have since the Z5P. Also in recent history your guys claims regarding Xperias based on rumors have almost always been false.

Strangely Sony never leveraged the 4k display. It could have used it upressing algorithms to create improvements in photo and video (which it was doing for video). Plus screenshot could have benefitted from the higher resolution.

But all those can also be done with some standalone software (Topaz Labs?) As well.

4k as a display is great, except it made very little sense on a small smartphone sized screen.

Sony should focus on improving its camera quality. It should have 2 x zoom lenses, and a 1inch main camera that doesn't crop into the surface area, effectively ruining the advantages of a much larger sensor. Plus it needs even brighter lenses, and improved HDR through both hardware and software.

Amd slightly lower prices. The reduction from 4k to QuadHD or 1080p should help reduce input costs.

imparanoic, 16 Mar 2024My younger brother has Asus rog 6, even better than Sony xp... moreIt's still ironic for me not seeing Sony put a dedicated DAC on their phones when they still have their Walkman division. ASUS and LG has no problem doing it, and LG has been doing it since the 2015 V10.

It's hard for me to trust Sony rumours since they always never end up being true. Also, Sony has always been distinctively different than other brands, so why would they want to follow them? Remember when Sony removed the headphone jack on their 2018 and 2019 flagship phones, even citing the rising trend of wireless audio? Guess what happened in 2020? Yes, exactly - Sony put it back on the Xperia 1 Mk2 and keeping it to this day.

We don't need more and more SamApple copycats. We need something different and refreshing, like what LG Mobile used to be.

DarlingYext, 15 Mar 2024Every brand seems to be going the generic route this year, ... moreI have similarly mixed feelings. I hated the signature tall-and-skinny ratio myself, but it WAS a signature of sorts, and I feel for the people who'll miss it. Better for me, worse for existing fans.

I also think 1080p is more than adequate at phone sizes, although support for higher-res wired external monitors would be welcome. We'll see what res they land on.
