This WILL happen to the HTC One as well, sometime in the near future. Many owners with adequate rooting knowledge will use buggy, incomplete and not fully compatible custom ROMs from non-standard sources to upgrade their phones. Others will simply ignore and add to Android Fragmentation. Recently, it has been discovered by Security Analysts at Symantec, that Facebook exploits security loopholes in Android to steal user data, contact information and private data on first launch (even before sign-in) and upload them to their servers, without user notice. Several other apps have also been found to do the same. However, Google's efforts to patch these system bugs will fail precisely because of this fragmentation caused by limiting the support for these "older" phones by the manufacturers themselves. So, next time think and buy. Please don't call me an Apple fan. IMHO, Android is superior, but the Android phone manufacturers are not. Apple has extended iOS 7 support to the age old iPhone 4. Oh! I forgot to mention that Apple's "Walled Garden" approach has now proved to be superior because it saved millions of iPhone users from having their personal data stolen. YES ! You read it right ! We gave the middle finger to FB.

AnonD-97776, 02 Jul 2013In that case. Root your One S and run TrickDroid Sense 5 or... moreIt does not make sense to defend HTC by mentioning the use of custom ROM. HTC has to serve their customers in an official way. Of course you can install all the compatible ROMs but you have to unlock the bootloader and say goodbye to your guarantee. It's fair for normal users to have the software in their phones up-to-date. Thus, they can have better user experiences as well as bug fixes, and security fixes.

It's a HTC tradition!!! I had the same experience with HTC Desire, which was supposed to be their flagship at that time. It was expensive but their excuse was that the hardware was not good enough to satisfy the requirement of ICS. Later on I was so weak to believe them again and purchased the One X. It was good phone hardware wise. I've been waiting for their updates quite long with many delays.
After such experience, I would never buy or advice anyone around me buy anything from HTC ever again. They don't want to serve their customers. If you want new software, buy a new phone. That's their policy and may be they are so proud of that and make it become their "legacy"

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2013sorry to say it is mid range. custom ROM are best bet, also... moreIt's still 400$, it was the first phone running 2 Krait cores too, beating most quad core A9 chips in performance. It had an Amoled screen. It was a flagship next to the One X, just a smaller and even slightly faster one - it was the main difference.
I'll say more - there are much slower phones coming out these days that are going to run 4.2. The One S is still technically as good, if not better than an average 2013 mid-ranger. It's about the same as the Galaxy S4 mini (..!) which is going to launch with 4.2 and get supported at least for 2 or 3 years knowing Samsung's track record lately.

Dilmeet, 02 Jul 2013This is a really Bad News for all people looking to buy an ... moreI agree, an HTC Phone costs a fortune here in the Philippines. The HTC Sensation XE was stucked at 1 update in its lifecycle and is also going to happen to HTC One S and not to mention those broken promises of htc. They should learn from Samsung on how to deliver updates, even though it's late, it's better than not having at all. Galaxy S saw 2 major updates in its lifecycle, Galaxy S2 same and S3 with 2 major updates and still counting. HTC One S costs almost the same as HTC One X but still considered as mid-range? oh please -_-
