Xiaomi, Oppo, vivo and OnePlus are rumored to be exploring the idea of Android without Google

02 May 2025
Xiaomi is said to lay the groundwork for that with HyperOS 3. Huawei is allegedly also involved with the project - the company already has its own Google-free platform.

          Imagine that actions have reactions.

Finally! Been waiting this for years. Together Xiaomi and BBK brands have enough users to leave Google and that shitty spyware, Google Mobile Services, behind.

Hope this is not just trade / tariff negotiations, but reality.

Would buy one in an instant. deGoogling current phones cleanly and still passing device integrity is near impossible (with the sole exceptions of Pixel using GrapheneOS).

A degoogled Android OS is as free as the normal Android, which is based on the open source AOSP, with non-free, non-open parts on top of that.
So a degoogled Android would have to replace the non-free Google parts, with something of their own.
                  * "free" as in freedom, not as in free beer

Existing Android open-source alternatives currently available : Ubuntu Touch and postmarkedOS.

If you don't want Android or iOS, you have to tinker a bit (or easier : outdated Windows phones).

                    I don't want a non-open-source OS.

It's all about an inflence war and muscle wrestling, but at the end of the day, people will have to be able to buy and use their phones, so nobody have to worry a bit. No one will be left outside.

HyperOS?? LOL 🤣 at it core it is still an Android. Unless, Huawei can fully build they own OS like iOS. But, in the end, it won't and even if they do, it will face the same fate as Samsung Taizen OS and Windows Phone OS 🙄

If Xiaomi really does that man that's clear that would be my first and only Xiaomi phone, they can't even patch their buggy OS, the performance is not even that great with HOS so if they really do a HOS3 without Google but at the other end can't even address those issue that's over for my I'll return to Samsung

This would be bad for us European consumers, but I understand where they are coming from. That said, would Motorola, OnePlus and Nothing follow suit? At some point the bubble is going to burst and if you can't rely on the US to allow Google to distribute Android freely, something else will have to take its place.

ChinaOS... Unless it is open-source, no thanks.

And the drama queens can calm down because devices running this OS will not be sold in all markets, for you nothing will change.

Honestly they should just do it like iOS, no google apps installed but you can download them. I don't mind using the brand notes, clock, messages app. But removing support for it, ehh idk🤷

It's a bit o confusion in the comments, and the news didn't clarify the situation enough. It's a mixed up between Harmony OS and Harmony OS Next.
Harmony OS (or EMUI outside China) is a degoogled Android OS, while Harmony OS Next is entirely another, completely new, operation system, in theory incompatible with Android apps.
The manufacturers in the news seem to explore the road of a degoogled Android OS.
For just Huawei, it was difficult to push degoogled phones on the external markets, but if most Chinese manufacturers would do that, that would be an entirely another game level. They just have to figure out some way to bridge Google's Firebase notication service with something of their own, and some other little things and that would work!
I use with success a degoogled Huawei I bought just for testing, so it can be done.
While I think that would be a good move, mind you, the Chinese are creepy with their software too!
As for the Harmony OS Next, it is possible that in the future, most or all Chinese manufacturers will offer this OS for their internal market, but it is unclear at this point if it will be offered outside China.
