Given the usual marketing overhype, this outcome should be considered a flop in Apple standards. When would people realize that a purely touchscreen UI is a "solution looking for a problem". Imagine the howls of protest if the controller for the PSP, PS3, XBox360 or Wii were all purely through a touchscreen, with no tactile feedback like one would get from a physical keypad, and there's not even haptic or force feedback like in the other better-designed touchscreen phones (any Samsung TS phone or N97/5800XM). The simple fact of the matter is that for the most basic & useful smartphone functions, a hardware keypad or button would be the fastest & most reliable way of accessing it. Making everything executable by touch only (and you have to look at the screen to do it, you can't type or press without looking at it unlike in a phone with a hardware keypad/keyboard) sacrifices utility & speed on the altar of gimmickry & fancy visuals.

This is the fundamental defect of Apple's design philosophy with regard to smartphones, and that's why I was never fooled by the hype, even with the help of the easily-dazzled media. But then again, given Apple's target market and the state of mobile technology in its home market, it is somehow unsurprising. It's the same way with their computers: part of the overprice you are paying for it is the cost of the marketing campaign and the not-so-subtle media manipulation.

[deleted post]Just wondering, if you really work at Nokia, why do you work at a place that you obviously don't want to be at? Something smells fishy and I don't think it's your breath.

Anonymous, 19 Jun 2009"I watched CNN few hours ago reporting the launch of Apple ... morePeople say that N97 and Omnia HD are so much better and so much less expensive, but thats not really the case. I got my Iphone 3GS for 200 bucks, as opposed to 600+ I'd have to pay for either of the other 2 devices unlocked. If Nokia really wanted to get the word out, they'd make deals with AT&T and whatnot to give reduced rates for their TOP phones, not the crap that they currently have there. Thats what this is all about, availability.

Also, the Iphone 3GS is an amazing phone with hands down the best OS and experience. Yeah it was a little late with MMS and copy paste, but now that it has all of those things, not to mention a little extra (Digital Compass, touch to focus, multitouch, itunes sync etc.), it is at LEAST up to par with other high end phones with the exception of the camera and flash. The camera is quite decent and video recording only needs to be so good for most people. If you are so camera crazy, buy a camera or shell out the extra money for the omnia HD or C905.

N97 is nothing more than a touchscreen N95. Even the processor and RAM do not match the Iphone 3GS, not to mention 3D acceleration. It's a good phone, but its not an "Iphone Killer".

          IPhone? never heard of one.

Oh is that the product you get at ToysRUs in the "8 and under" section?

Buy a real phone and move on with your lives.

Beh. When Apple makes a MOBILE phone I can use with ONE hand I'll consider it. I need the other hand when I'm mobile (moving) to hold a bag, umbrella, whatever. Touchscreen is a failure no matter how nice it works, no matter who makes it.

For 719 euro customers could be perfectly entitled to instead of buying this device buying the Nokia 5800, a 250 euro netbook, a digital camera, or getting the Samsung Omnia HD, and still have loose change. Your choice.

Actually today the iPhone has sold 150% more than last year's 3G release day - according to O2's company website.

Anonymous, 19 Jun 2009I watched CNN few hours ago reporting the launch of Apple 3... more"I watched CNN few hours ago reporting the launch of Apple 3GS in US. as much I could see, few people were queing in front of apple shop, maybe around ten persons or so.. Anyway, one mobile expert that was being asked by CNN reporter, "what do you think is the serious competitor for apple 3GS?" He said Blackberry but it still need to catch up. And the other one is palm pre.. Not a word mentioning Nokia, let alone N97. Quite surprising e that Nokia is so unpopular in US, majority of people don't know or don't even care N97 is exist Lol.. But my point is, if you interpreting the US trend as a world trend, add to some justification to side with Apple, you are wrong. Nokia is the market leader all over the world and should be given some due respect. And do we even realizing the bigger fact US is on the process of stepping down from his status as world leader. In terms of world currency, my newspaper this morning said that China, Russia, India, Brazil and among other country try to make other international currency via IMF, rather than than US dollar. We will see this in the next 50 years. I'm not US hater having said this, but that's the fact, that inevitably will also influence the world phone industry."

You're right. This is the ONLY reason why Iphone is selling this well. If it wouldn't be for the uninformed people, noone'd buy one. Seriously, who'd buy it, when you can get a N97 or Omnia HD for around 200€ less?!?!?!
