Hi john this is Sid, sorry for the late reply.
To convert an avi file into a 3gp format ( Excelant quality ) download this software
xilisoft . The link is below.
http://www.softandco.com/download/xilisoft-3gp-video-converter/free_download_18878.html
When u load the program, select the add button to open an avi file or any other file types that are listed. Then make sure that under the heading profile, 3gp is selected, this is the extenion it will make it into. Now to set the setting of the avi file. To do this
select the avi file u have loaded into the list box, You will notice the right panel will show some properties.
Only two properties need to be set
the video size and same_quality propertie
make sure that the video size is 176 X 144 and same_quality=true
then simply click th encode button
this will encode the file u have selected to 3gp. U can preview it on the little preview. but u will have to save it onto ur phone to see the real clear video,
Please note that the software is a TRIAL VERSION so it only does FIVE MINS also a five minute file, in same_quality=true mode will take up a lot of megs. Arround 30 megs
In case u would like a sample 3gp file, i can provide one for u, on my personal server, my personal server is not switched on 24/7 so u'll have to arrange a time , thats if u want.
I hope i didnt bore u with too muich writng but it took me some time to get it to work.
one last thing, i found that in numerious occasions when i clicked the add button, the program seemed to crached, if the open dialofg box does not appear, just wait patiently for a bit, and dont do any thing with ur computer , will will load after a while.
Well have fun i hope u mangae to do it.

Backing onto my opinion onto the phone not turning on when there is a SIM card inside, and does turn on when there is no SIM card inserted. This is a GUIDELINE post, regarding all of the problems people are having with their X3 Handsets.
*MOST COMMON QUERY FIRST*
*MP3*
You CANNOT use the supplied cable to put mp3's onto the phone. You need to order a Memory Card (or SD adaptor) and a card reader for the computer. Then you copy the files to your memory card, commonly Drive E or F, under the Music directory.
*CAMERA PROBLEMS*
Some people have reported problems with the camera being blurry. It is. Face it. But it is not that bad. It could be better.
*THE SMALL BLACK CLIPPY THING IN THE BOX*
Well, its supposed to reduce noise apparently, according to somebody earlier on.
*RANDOM TURNING OFF LEADING TO PHONE NOT SWITCHING ON WITH SIM CARD INSERTED, BUT WORKS WITHOUT A SIM CARD INSERTED*
If you notice corruption on the outside screen, (I had a black line and lots of multicoloured spots), take out the battery, leave the phone for 24 hours, then put the battery back in. The phone will then work. Or at least that what happened to me yesterday, the phone works perfect again now.
*SOFTWARE VERSIONS*
My local o2 shop HAVE CONFIRMED that there are constant software upgrades to the X3. You have to take your phone, plus your proof of purchase, even if you did not purchase the phone from O2 themselves, and they will send it off for an upgrade. The process will take 7 to 14 days while in the service centre.
I hope the moderators could post this as a "sticky" somewhere, and that future users of this discussion use this instead of posting the same questions over and over again! Please, only post if you have a review or a question that isn't mentioned on this post. Thankyou.

Thankyou Nick, I'm still not sure how much use it will be but at least I know what it's supposed to do! Perhaps a nice little sd card adapter would have been more useful...

I have now read the other x3 reviews and discovered the clippy thing has already been disscussed, feel a bit of a doughnut but glad I'm not the only one who not only doesnt know what it is but has also folded it in half, rendering it useless!

Ray, ebuyer.co.uk.
There has been a major change of plan in the X3 department! If you have the "not turning on with sim card in" problem, leave the battery out for around 24 hours... it works now!!! all going sweet... and, O2 HAVE CONFIRMED THAT A NEW S/W IS OUT! You have to get your phone sent off though...

The thing is...
Last christmas, exactly the same thing happenned to my X1. I didn't want to buy another X1, seeing as the same thing may happen again, which is where I'm stuck. I either can go for another x3, where I may be living in doubt about whether its going to crash again, or get an Orange SPV C500. I do like the fact of the SPV that it has windows mobile and so can synchronise with my pc, (a bit like I did with my PDA, which, until recently, had served me well. I wonder if anybody could help me, as I know I have been sticking up for the x3 throughout this long battle and think its about time i faced facts and look at the future. I know the x3 is quite buggy, I know the photos aren't that good, but I like it, but the only problem is that it doesn't sync properly with outlook, or display HTML webpages, or have bluetooth. Am I fumbling in the dark without looking at the true facts?
So, here is the final question, and note form for anyone not bothered to read the above. X3 or SPV C500?

I fancy a change of plan. The Orange SPV C500... whats it like? Does it have the dust problem, cause my X3 has to go back to the place i bought it, which is from a catalogue, but the SPV C500 is on there for the same price.

The first thing I did with that plastic thing was to fold it, thus it made it unuseable for what ever the porpuse was for it. SYMBIAN is a standard , not only nokia are involved but other mobile companies.
Finally converted some avi files into 3gp and I tell u the quality is great its almost like watching tv on ur phone. But a lot of megs. Want i want to know is if i put an entire 3gp film on a 1 gig mini sd card and watch it on my phone, will there be breaks in between or will it be really slow, I've been told it wont.
As for the mini SD card question regarding to any other phones that use it, well the min SD card is new and hopfully other phones will be using it soon, as its small so manufactures can design smaller phones based on the smaller sd card, there are another two mobiles that i know of, one of which is the organge ...... model. I can't remember the other.

That metal plasticy thing is supposed to be clipped onto a wire to take the "noise" from the wire i think, it makes the sound a bit clearer. I think thats what its for...

Almizer, LOL I didnt know I was the only one that had that plasticky thing... I thought I'd dropped something into the box!!! lmao.
I will be looking at another X3, as it is a brilliant phone. I dont get that smudge thing, only when facing towards sunlight.
I do have the card now and the best phone for that price IMHO, is the x3. I will have to see what the o2 shop say...
Al, any more queries, I will be glad to answer them over email, but for now, until I get my *new* x3, I may as well not be here! Lucky for some unknowns. I will be back every now and then though. Vaughan and Al, keep in touch and for anyone that wants a sensible answer to any queries, email me...

Sad nick shame about that sim. I got a little crack in the ariel somehow so I may have to go get it replaced. Like you I got the memory card so will need another x3. Any other phones take mini sd? Like I said before though I can't find another phone that suits me more than the x3.
There are problems with the phone, that smudge on the camera is annoying does anyone NOT get that with the X3? Like sid said, if it had bluetooth it would be great, thats one thing I do really want.
Whats symbian though? is that like smart phone software?
Oh yeah Nick, whats that weird random metal/plastic thing that comes in the phone box? You can kind of fold it round to make a tube. Can't see what it does.
