HTC One M9 review: One up

23 March 2015
One of the hottest bodies in business just got hotter, in time for next season. Touched-up and brushed-down, the HTC One M9 arrives spot on time third year in a row, looking like a celebrity and acting like a pro. There's an engine boost and upgrades...

It's a shame there isn't really any perfect phone out there at the moment. I was thinking of the M9 but am unhappy with that battery life and heating.

What a waste of a 20MP camera. Come on GSMARENA, these shots are poor, very poor. HTC still have major noise issues in their camera and the low light photograph quality is laughable. My next phone will definitely not be a HTC.

Very nice audio output on headphones again. Screen is unimpressive (low resolution for being a 2015 flagship) and it's also too small for my taste. I expected more, but seems like my next device really isn't made by HTC when I switch from the M8. :)

GSMARENA, YOU SAID: "There are only a few smartphones louder than the M9 in the whole history of the industry". WICH ARE THOSE "FEW" SMARPHONES LOUDER THAN M8 OR M9 ?????? NAME THEM !! Personally i know only one: Nokia N91 and maybe Samsung Serenta for Bang & Olufsen, but with this last one i am not sure anymore. So those "few" smartphones louder than M9 are in fact just only one: Nokia n91. Of course i am talking here only about the loudness of the headphones output, not the speakers....

Screen resolution is not a disadvantage GSM ARENAAAAA. It's the clear mind of a manufacturer that knows a bigger resolution is just stupppid

In terms of look htc one m7 and one max are the best. Performance wise m8 is the best but the asymmetrical speakers in m8 and m9 looks weird. There may not be any boom box or any stereo device having one small speaker/grill and the other one larger in this world expect m8 and m9. Htc may be the only company coming with such an odd design for some meagre improvement in sound. They should have paced the sensors on one side and the front cam on the other side on the top bezel so there would have been enough space in between to put a speaker grill equal to the size of speaker grill on the bottom bezel.

Akira, 23 Mar 2015This test is based on preproduction firmware. HTC just cam... moreThe OTA update pushed last week is the final firmware. Read this quote:

"The phone received a big OTA update last week while we were in the process of preparing our review. Could it be the final firmware to fix all heating issue, we wondered. We went ahead and redid the whole benchmark session. What you would read on this page is based on the scores we got after the update.

We did notice a difference in regards to how hot the phone got under use. It took a longer time for the the One M9 to get hot, but ultimately, it still did get as hot as before.

Another change that we did notice after the update is the measurable performance of the smartphone. Before the update it got 4020 points on GeekBench (down to 3761 after the update) and 57900 on AnTuTu (down to 51727 after the update). The single and multi-core CPU scores as calculated by BaseMark OS II 2.0 were slightly higher before the update, too. On the other hand, the GPU benchmarks showed no change at all so we suspect HTC has changed the main CPU throttling policy in relation to the internal device temperature."

Funny thing, there are no 3rd party S6 heating test reviews...

Not that it heats up probably much, but with all the talk about em ditching qualcomm for the issue, one would expect someones test at least to prove Sammy had a case...

Dissapointing batterylife to say the least...

For now, M9 and S6 both somewhat dissapointing for flagships

Htc made another flop Im affraid, shame...

Nice phone... Bad chipset. I will be avoiding anything with a snapdragon 810 in it as you will either get a throttled experience or one that isn't throttled and a phone that overheats. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the flagships catch fire with that chipset in.. But according to snapdragon there are no issues... Who would you believe... Snapdragon or the hundreds of reviewers all reporting heating issues and thermal throttling?

I would buy this phone if developer version will be sold outside the US. Meaning factory unlocked bootloader and S-OFF. Besides there are no substantial changes from M8.

Now LG and Sony are in a sweet spot because they are now fully aware of the horrible outcome of SD 810. They have time to fix their flagships before realising them.

If Sony and LG produces the same crappy flagships like Sammy and HTC it will be a huge disappointment.

Bottom line; last years flagships were much better than Q1 of 2015.
