Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact review

17 March 2018
It's once again peak smartphone season and Sony is next to join the annual spring race. But while others do regular and plus-size models, Sony, as usual, is going towards the other end of the spectrum with the new Xperia XZ2 Compact.

Not having jack is inconvenience, but also may help some to realize quality difference and make some bring quality to wireless. for now snys ldac may be best in bt. but its far away from wired quality, that can play under 20Hz freq. and over 1400kbit stream. Just blindly following trend for the sake of mostly visuals is funny coming from sony that says it offers best medua experience. how is that best. I hope they realize. Now its age when we got enough memory and speeds to listen to uncompressed music and multiple companies offering millions of songs, yet years old cd's are the best quality audio you can listen to if you care. because thats the most enjoyable experience, more than that of mp3/..even flac. I tell you.

xperianced, 19 Mar 2018"...also waves goodbye to the analogue audio jack." Isn'... moreTo Sony's credit though, they did "give" their special LDAC Bluetooth Codec to Google to be used in Android 8 and beyond. Is it painful that they omitted the 3.5MM port? Yes, undoubtedly. But ever since my Z5 Premium's 3.5MM port broke, I have used Bluetooth headphones and have NEVER looked back.

Also, People swearing they won't buy a device that's Bluetooth-and-USB-C-only are as pretentious as Gluten-free people and the folks who SWORE they won't buy music from iTunes and insist on becoming CD holdouts...

I'm sorry, but it looks like a Gionee/BLU/cheap Chinese midrange phone you could probably buy for $200 on Amazon or somewhere...

The Z3, Z5 Premium, and XZ Premium remain the hallmark of Xperia design IMHO.

Kiyasuriin, 19 Mar 2018I agree."...also waves goodbye to the analogue audio jack."

Isn't it strange that the company that once revolutionized the world with "the Walkman" makes such a dumb decision?

Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised as they pissed consumers off with their otherwise good feature-phones and their proprietary "fastport".

Just stopped reading after the above line.
        No-jack = no interest = no sale!

Best ergonomic design ?? I believe this now that sony is on its way and not a copy-paster like companies that copy-paste notch on their displays. Enjoy notch ,notch lovers ...

Kiyasuriin, 19 Mar 2018I agree.Didn't want them to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack though, but they removed it, and probably will have a higher chance of doing that to their future high-end flagships. Regarding the fingerprint sensor...I have mixed feelings about it. I always liked the way how Sony put their fingerprint sensor on their smartphones, unlocking with my right fingers is just too easy, even if I am not a left-handed, using my left fingers to unlock my smartphone was easy too. The reason why I am able to do so is because I always buy international models, but here's the deal-breaker; for the US users, they couldn't have their fingerprint sensor enabled because it is placed on the side, which have some patent issues. And that is why, Sony moved the fingerprint sensor to the back, hoping if that would appeal to the US customers. I don't mind them putting on the back, but it is more like putting the fingerprint sensor on the side makes them a little uniqueness from the other brand manufacturers, putting on the back would just make it feel like "it is another typical smartphone we see everyday, with the fingerprint sensor on the back, this, that etc". They did a decent job for their high-end flagships camera this year, even though it got the same rear camera specifications like last year, thanks to the new BIONZ (Image processing or lens? I forgot, lol) and also their improvements on the camera software. But on the design side, a lot can be improved, I suggest opting back the OmniBalance design instead of the current Ambient Flow, it looks much more mature and with some refinement on the edges and the bezels of the smartphone, it can still keep up to 2018 standards to be honest...

After seeing this XZ2 review, I'm glad I choose Motorola G. What motorola does to G series is far better and more substantive to average Android user. Just give em stock android and sales will increase.

5 inch and thick bezel is compact? And no headphone jack? As a fan of the Z Compact series since 2014 I am very disappointed. Why should I use Z Compact series if it's almost as big as other phones?

sportsman, 19 Mar 2018Sony, how about going for the stock Android next time? :DNo

Can someone fire the whole mobile division of Sony. We just want a smaller bezel. We did'nt ask to remove the jack and the side finger print. Z3 compact and ZR are the best example.

current user of XZ1 compact. Had the chance to feel the XZ2 compact dummy. size wise it is only 1mm taller than the XZ1c but fits in 5" screen with smaller bezels, which i think is fine for it to be called a compact.

the thickness is regrettable but i don't think it's awful, but if you compare spec by spec with other brands buyers do not sympathise going thicker rather than smaller. The matt material is nice, and the back somewhat reminded me of my old ZR.

Fingerprint sensor - what more can i say. they ditched the best position (side mount) for the (xxxxxxx) US market. This pushes them into the bland category of the other Asian brands. No headphone jack - for me i would still like it to be there.

With the thickness and bigger battery (albeit bigger and better screen) it should at least match the over 100 hr of battery life of its father and grand fathers. Then all the other compromises (no wireless charging etc) is not worth it.

The Z3compact is the perfect size and bezel ratio. If they updated that with a 3.5" that would be the ideal new compact.

sportsman, 19 Mar 2018Also a Z3 compact user here. With all these love/hate situ... moreso true, z3c bezels are really small. it's truly compact, light, slim. but it is defective, touch screen not working from the top part, camera haze, touch screen glue loosens. If only Sony remake the z3c with metal body and more powerful processor.

"the ergonomic curve was shaped to fit nicely in hand" -> of course. remember holding nokia 3310? the bulk is always ergonomic.
but this is such a lazy design for sony. trimming bezels while adding thickness. poor Sony.
if you want ergonomic, buy cheap phones, it is thick, using less slippery plastic, also tougher. yes, just like this one, expensive yet feels cheap.

Do you really expect 1080/2160 to consume equal to 720/1280? That's 2.3 million light bulbs vs 0.9 million light bulbs.

For all people who are complaining about size of display (that is not compact anymore because it has 5 inches) I would like to inform you that XZ2 compact is still smaller than iPhone 8, and if you don't consider iPhone 8 to be a compact phone then you're really special snowflake.
