Nokia 9 PureView review

05 April 2019
The Once and Future King of mobile photography - the PureView camera - is back! The Nokia's champion has lived through the twilights of Symbian and Windows Phone, to be once again reborn in the peak of Android era. HMD's Nokia 9 is the bearer of the next-gen PureView snapper, and it's not one, but whole six of them!

Sunlight contrast ratio is staler cause Nokia invented the first brightest OLED even before Samsung knows about it aka clear black OLED.

ZolaIII, 06 Apr 2019While OLED adoption is just getting hot enough with new pla... moreSo by that, it means that high refresh rate OLEDs will only be made when there are enough demand and workforce to manufacture them?
I remember an article that I've read from the past, where a Japanese researcher actually found an alternative (and better I suppose) raw material and process in making an OLED panel. The article also compared the newly found substitute to what Samsung's Super AMOLED panels are made of and how are they made.
Don't get me wrong, 60Hz is fine for me already, but after having used an iPad Pro with 120Hz display, going back to normal 60Hz screens feels like a sluggish performance even when it's not.
Even the iPhone XS devices with 120Hz response rate feels very silky and feels much more natural to respond to my screen actions than a regular 60Hz display.

Nokia is the only phone so far that produces images virtually the same as DSLR. Both p30 and iPhone see look like good phone cameras only. That's the same as comparing two wheelbarrows to a Ford truck.

Anonymous, 06 Apr 20192600 is enough to go outside without any issues. Still, this high screen sunlight legibility means users will not even have any single problem seeing something on their displays even when the sun is directly hitting the phone screen.
I have a good vision and I could see my phone under direct sunlight with maximum brightness, but there are people that need better visibility on smartphone screens, and this Nokia 9's display will greatly help them.

I own the phone for a four days now. If you expect your photos to be equally good or better as they were in Lumia 1020, forget it. You'll be disappointed.
Buying this phone after Lumia 1020, Mi 6, P20 Pro got me to conclusion that I'd be better for me (as a fan of photography) to buy a mirrorless. Hope this opinion helps the hesitators as I was one of you.

They have used the Pureview moniker. So this is a photography centered phone, or at least they sell it like that. After the fiasco and the bad results in low light, recording video, with a camera app that crash frequenly, and even in still photos not reaching the quality of other flagships. Its a big fail. Add the slow processing time, the need of an extra software for editing to get remarkable results, the lack of the removed useful features, like the audio jack and microSD card slot and becomes a disaster.

Knowing that it was not going to meet expectations, it should have been canceled or not use that nickname. However they have preferred to keep it to see if they cheat someone that buy it thinking it is magnificent simply by have the Pureview printed. As they have done with other obsolete and overpriced models just to use the Nokia brand.

And seems pathetic try now to sell it because, oh, at least it has a good display... wait, pay $650 or 600 euros only for a display that is not even the best? No thanks, i'm not blind. For that price you can find several phones overall better. It'll be a miracle if they sell all the limited units.

You don't find professional photographers buying Light cameras for a good reason. Sure that Xiaomi after try make it work, if can't acomplish it, they'll cancel the agreetment with Light before release a phone like this mediocre and unfinished one. The value of the brand and its prestige should be above release a bad and unfinished product. Although perhaps they can reach a good result. We will see.

So they sold the device with a headset which couldn't be used without the adapter....

This phone is simply a waste: From the box to the inside: Buggy as usual, thanks to Android One and the no-optimization team , 5 cams but can't shoot any 4K videos, pictures take several seconds before be recorded...

Seriously, after the review who can claim still have the willing to buy this thing? Damned, for a high-range device it should be rated 2 stars: A real mid-range with these inconveniences could have the 4 stars rate, but here we're talking about a high-range device... But that's Nokia by HMD: Beautiful outside, stinking inside...

                                      > Since the Nokia 9 doesn't have an analog audio port, HMD is also proving a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter. We have to admit this is the first time a maker ships a smartphone, flagship at that, with a headset that will always require an adapter and we find this odd, if not lazy.

Nokia has shipped the device with earphones that can, with the adapter, fit into both USB-C and 3.5 mm jacks. Nokia has also provided a device that, with the adapter, can take both USB-C and 3.5 mm plugs.

Providing a USB-C set of earphones doesn't allow the user to use it with 3.5 mm devices. Having one set of earphones with an adapter to fit many devices makes more sense than having different earphones for each device we have. Inches of a single cord vs. feet of cords that can get tangled. Plus people generally only have teo ears, so it's not like you can make use of those extra earbuds you're lugging around.

It's not odd or lazy. It's logical and considerate.

Shanti Dope, 06 Apr 2019Okay, so let's settle the fact that 120Hz on OLED panels is... moreWhile OLED adoption is just getting hot enough with new players jumping in bandwagon things will change, price will go down and diversity will rise & with it high refresh rate one's will emerge but OLED will stay significantly pricier than LED's simply because some really rare element's are used for producing them. All fuss about OLED's is wrong & they reached their good sustainable performance & life expectation size per emitting cell long time ago (around 200~250 DPI) so that ain't the display technology of the future the micro LED's on fully developed substrate is. On today's PC market (which is slowly dying category) you cant find an good all around monitor no matter of it's price category and it goes up to the fact that it's much better to buy a good TV & use it as monitor. All the speach about high refresh rate is overpriced the blink of an eye (20 ms) is a golden standard for a refresh rate we could spot. That translates to minimum sustainable refresh rate of 50 Hz while there is no need to go over 90 Hz what so ever but there is a need for fast buffer syncing so that the dips under 50 Hz can be avoided.
