Sony Xperia 1 review

08 June 2019
Sony has completely revamped its Xperia series yet again, and this year the common denominator is the cinematic screen. Every new Xperia smartphone gets a 21:9 panel for the most immersive viewing experience, but the Xperia 1 is special. It is the Xperia Premium reborn, with a large 6.5" OLED 4K HDR display and today we'll get to know it better.

Alex, 11 Jun 2019I've started reading comments, from the newest, and all of ... morefor most people posting opinions a smartphone is kind a social status indicator and allegiance declaration to a preferred manufacturer (when not posting being paid by a specific manufacturer as in "gut the competitor"...:) ), mine is newer, looks better, nicer photos, I get in night time pictures as luminous as in daytime (than, for the god sakes, why take them in night time?), as. 99.(9)% of this guys have no clue how a lens is designed, how the sensors chips are working and that actually it is impossible to have a miniature lens system, as those used in the phones, to get the results they want without heavy data processing. in the end the nice pictures they get from their 'smart" phones are mostly the images the software creates to please their perception. what's funny is that the super images they get out their +1000 phones are posted in severely downgraded versions on instagram or facebook :))) and viewed on not calibrated monitors that do not show the real colors....

by this point of view, if the camera is of main interest, a honest medium price phone like, for example, nokia 9 is better as, while it does not produce very good native jpg's, it offers the possibility for a more than average photo enthusiast to process the images as he / she pleases and getting closer to a pocket size camera replacement with a few regular but not fancy phone device features.

Is it true that xperia 1 gets 120Hz display even in normal situation? I mean like the screen razer phone/ ipad pro 10.5 are having.

If only they stuck a 4,000mAh cell in this baby, it would have class-leading endurance for a flagship. Possibly close to 100 hours. But instead it's just "okay".

I've started reading comments, from the newest, and all of them were about the camera. If you people care so much about camera, noise and dynamic range, why don't you buy a real camera, instead of expecting wonders from a phone? I mean, the cheapest $350 DSLR will outperform, by lightyears, the best $1000 phone. Why so much fuss about a phone which is capable of making photos? If you want usable photos, buy a $250 phone. If you want good photos, buy a cheap APS-C camera. If you want awesome photos, buy a "full-frame" camera. If you have money, buy a $1000 phone plus a medium format camera, and post your photos on a social media, in 2 MP resolution. Your followers will find you very cool.

sohail shafayat, 09 Jun 2019for any ratio, 2160p is for 4K. to be proper 4K on a 21:9 s... morepixels et kilo are differents. pixels in length and k in width. not the same ( 4k ultra hd "3840x2160" it's named 4k because this is getting closer to the 4k resolution not because it's 2160p.
it's like storage memory a lot of people are mistaken between kibibytes and kilobytes.

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2019So what if people questioned this website about the scoring... moreI could have, but it was going to be useless ... No tech site would risk losing readers because they would if they did the same to Apple or Samsung. Xr does not deserve more than 3,7.

There is another famous site that always rate iphones above all android phones. Iphone Xr there got better score than Note 9 and Mate 20 Pro.

everett2000, 10 Jun 2019I respect your opinion but,... It has blue light filter,... moreYou can select which panel of the carrousel you want as your homescreen, just have to check the little home icon on the upper left corner when configuring panels.

everett2000, 11 Jun 2019I read and looked at that link and was quite astonished,...... more"Most of those images - and I'm talking about 80% at least - were taken using the wide angle or telephoto camera's"

There were 38 photos that say F1.6 in the EXIF - 38/62 photos, so over 60% of photos shown in that website have been taken using the main camera(= less than 40% of them are UWA and telephoto). I really have no idea where you even got that "80%" figure from.
And photographers there aren't dumb so they always check beforehand which lens has been used for the photo they're observing, the gallery viewer in the website allows you to do so easily. The sharpening pattern is consistent across all of 3 cameras and of course that means all the problems pointed out by many of the comments can be found on the images coming out of the main camera as well.

Nick Tagataka, 11 Jun 2019It's not really a grain or noise but sharpening artifacts, ... moreI read and looked at that link and was quite astonished,... in that they don't seem to resemble anything that I've got from mine. Then I realised:

Most of those images - and I'm talking about 80% at least - were taken using the wide angle or telephoto camera's, which everyone has acknowledged produce poorer results. It's the same with every triple camera setup: while they're useful, the extra cameras aren't as good as the main ones.

The main cam doesn't display many of the problems noted by DP Review readers. A little haloing if it switches on backlight HDR - the same as every other cameraphone - a few edge artifacts in places but over sharp? No. The main camera is simply not over-sharpened at all.

And that indoor shot, very very low dynamic range. Come on Sony, step up your Superior Auto mode camera algorithm!

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2019I'm not talking about without noise in photos. But looking ... moreIt's not really a grain or noise but sharpening artifacts, which is way worse. Many people here confuse oversharpening as a natural way of rendering details, but in reality it's far from ideal since it often destroys textures in low contrast area. Anyone who's defending the company for this type of image processing should head to DPReviews and see what amateur/pro photographers are saying about this.

But looking ... moreThat image was taken using portrait mode, which a) uses the inferior Samsung-sourced telephoto camera and b) uses a very basic noise reduction algorithm compared to the main modes. It's the trade off you get for the effect and not at all representative of the quality of the camera in day to day usage.

If only had a nice audio chip for headphones like G7, i can live with one day only battery life but audio quality...
