Sony Xperia 1 review

08 June 2019
Sony has completely revamped its Xperia series yet again, and this year the common denominator is the cinematic screen. Every new Xperia smartphone gets a 21:9 panel for the most immersive viewing experience, but the Xperia 1 is special. It is the Xperia Premium reborn, with a large 6.5" OLED 4K HDR display and today we'll get to know it better.

But looking at the high level of noise on the person face in such good light conditions is just a big NO. Sony camera is well-known to be noisy since day 1. Having such noisy photos in 2019 is just bad.

You could have done the same for Samsung's phones. Did you? And if you did, would the scores change? I'm sure they will be corrected if there was indeed an error. How about you raise your doubts about the scores for S10 and Note 9 and see if they are "corrected"?

Stop being immature and raising a tantrum like a child.

It has blue light filter, navigation controls adaptability, music upgrading and video enhancement.

I have my gripes with the UI (Why can't I place my home screen in the middle of the carousel?) but its feature set is fairly true to stock, with Sony's own apps containing many of the things you say it was missing.

I said sammyboys bec... moreS10+ score is fair in my opinion (0.2 stars less than the S9 which, in my opinion, is a better phone even though the design is similar to S8). S10+ improved in some areas but definitely disappointed in some (like the ones mentioned).

Xperia 1, on the other hand, does not have enough viable pros to outweigh the cons well enough to justify the 4.6 rating or even beat the S10+. And if we downgraded the S10+ score, it would not go lower than 4.3 because of what it offers.

                          Hi,

I had this for a few days and compared it to my note 9.

The look and feel of the phones is much better in the hand with better aspect ratio for reading webpages but on youtube, netflix you still have to pinch to zoom but it does not crop it as much as the samsung note 9, playing content from my plex server plays it in 21:9 if the source video is in that format and if its 16:9 then it will play with black bars on the sides which you can stretch to fit.

screen quality and color accuracy is much better than samsung's over saturated display especially in Sony's creator mode, but i found it auto brightness did not work as well and that it did not go as bight as the samsung at all, somewhat restricted possibly due to saving battery life.

Speakers, I keep reading they are fantastic but they sound no where near as good as the samsung AKG tuned ones, they have less bass and more tinie sounding (both phones support Atmos stereo speakers)

Camera quality fantastic, a lot of control over the camera especially the cinealt app. the pictures taken were much sharper than the Note 9, bare in mind that the note is nearly a year old and has had many updates especially on the camera front to. Talking of sharpness the digital zoom was not that great and introduced less sharp pictures also the stutter speed was slower than the samsung so when you have everything set on auto and you want to point and shoot the sony's shots came out blurry while the samsung was also very quick and accurate again this can be improved as the firmware in matured.

The fingerprint sensor should have been under the display and not on the side, especially considering the slim design of the phone.

Now the GUI, this is why i ended up selling the Sony Xperia 1. The lack of options and controls, Android Pie comes as standard with dark mode, but not on the Sony the option is there but does not do anything as Sony has disabled it for some weird reason on a Oled and that size battery they should have enabled it, folder options is just one type and the second home screen (not the news one) which there is no option to disable. They need to start offering more finer control on the GUI and setting like the oneplus or the new Samsung One interface which is good. Things like dark mode, navigation bar adjustments, blue light filter, video enhancer feature, Sound quality features like Atmos profiles. i know it suppose to be more to stock android as possible but just options like this make a difference.

This is just my observation for the short period I had it but Sony is definitely on the right track, just more fine tuning needed to GUI and better hardware to keep up with the Jones.

Slower charging is because the of that feature that charges slower after 90% so your phone will not keep charging to keep 100% until you remove from outlet. All you need is to turn it off.

How about we all ask them to reduce score of s10+ because of all that bloatware, slow updates (no way android 10 comes before late january), the hole that takes away part of the screen ruining media experience, unwanted touches on the edged areas and slow charging too?

My point is ... Would people cry and bother gsma staff to change the score if beloved s10+ was rated above Xperia 1? I doubt if S10+ was 4,8 and same 4,6 for xperia someone would express their opinion.

4.2 or 4.6. Does a subjective score matter so much to you? Most people here read the whole review, or at least the first and last pages to gauge how good the phone is.

Anonymous, 10 Jun 20191) Physical FPS is faster than in-screen. It will work no ... more1) The in-display fingerprint scanner can be just as fast as the capacitive now. And if you buy a 950 euro phone it makes sense that you will keep the utmost of caution to make sure the screen or anything doesn't break. And there are always cases.
                                2) It depends on the preference, but since I didn't really miss it on my S7 I see your point. I was just using that as an argument point cause you compared this phone to Mi 9, a way better value for its price.
                                3) An amazing 3W difference which is still slower than S10+ charging. (The half-hour charging is faster on Xperia 1 but the full charge time is less on S10+, not to mention the battery capacity difference)
                                4) I never used it but a lot of people I know use it and I am sure everyone who uses it is gonna think twice before they fork up 950 euros for a phone without it. And it's always nice to have an option if the cable gets damaged.

If you got the idea that I am a Samsung fanboy just by looking at my favorites list, you really should think twice before you speak. I listed two phones that I have owned throughout my life (I owned more, like the SONY Xperia and LG, but I couldn't find the exact models on this site to list). I criticize Samsung as well, which is why I haven't yet moved on from my S7 in almost three years time. (Samsung S10+ incredibly disappointed me with the same charging speeds, the punch hole camera and the big differences in the European and American versions of the phone)

As for the other phones, their scores may be debated but they are more or less correct. The moment I read the verdict on the Sony Xperia 1 is the moment I knew there was a mistake cause usually, you don't see that many cons listed in a 4.6 rated phone. Is it a 4.2 rated phone? Maybe not, but it's definitely not 4.6 or more.

Sony while ago sign a deal with Light. Same that worked with HMD to make Nokia 9 cam system.

Max J (@Samsung_News_) said one hour ago that a Xperia with dual selfie and 6 rear cam is being developed.

                                    2) IR blast is useless, using your tv control to switch to another channel is not going to kill you.
                                    3) 18W is more than what Samsung offers, these 25 or 40W other offer will do huge damage to battery. I doubt these batteries will have 50% of their capacity after 15 months.
                                    4) Qi charging is slower, makes the phone hot, damages battery and you cant use while charging

Did you and other cry for the 4,4 of Mi9?

Did you and other cry for 4,7 of P30 Pro?

I suppose NO answers all question above.

OP7 Pro = lower res screen, less Hertz, no sd slot, no IP rating, same no AF for UWA etc

P30 Pro = except photos and battery endurance , the phone is disappointing for the price

One costs about $700 and the other much more. What are excuses?

Truth is nobody would cry to gsma change the score if Samsung was rated above 4,6.
