Sony Xperia 1 IV review

If anything, the 2018 situation where Sony adopts an almost full mainstream approach, wasn't well-received, the year where Sony phones turned curvy, with half-hearted bezel-less design, fingerprint sensors were put in the back, and removing the 3.5mm jack from the flagship. Flagship XZ2 was dubbed an HTC U11 copycat, while flagship XZ3 was dubbed a Galaxy S9 clone. The best-received Xperia of 2018 was their XA2 Plus, a mid-ranger that adopts the bezel-less approach that Sony fans want. It was so bad, that Sony had to return to a beloved boxy, blocky form factor but with a better bezel-less design alongside the side fingerprint a year after in 2019 since Xperia 1, and the 3.5mm jack returned 2 years after in 2020 in their flagship 1 II.

Sure, the mainstream/trending features that don't ruin Xperia legacy like 120Hz HRR w/wo LTPO tech, wireless charging, faster charging, matte finish phones, etc. should be kept around and improved by Sony. But the ones like 4K (reasons: Z5 Premium's legacy & certain jobs that do need 4K res like the one in Xperia Pro) and 21:9 (reasoning: the sole plausible multimedia-industry standard aspect ratio for modern smartphones era, utilized in movies & multitasking due to Sony Pictures collaboration after Sony restructuration), I think it will stay for a long time as it defined modern Xperia since 2019. And no, I don't condone Sony for removing both the cable & charger on their Mk.IV series.

Anonymous, 12 May 2022throttles to 65% loooooollllllllllPhone could throttle to 10% and Sony fanboys would still defend it as Sony's superior battery care.

All the time I see your posts Sony fanboy rants posted like 2 minutes ago with 4+ likes already. Your fanboyism will not save Sony's mobile division. Now to your points:

"Price tag is relevant considering the on-board innovation & features." read the review again, the phone is a worse version of Galaxy S22 Ultra with only exception of the Pro camera mode, which is basically same as it has been on their Xperia phones for several generations. What innovation again?!

"That's the first exciting & innovating device we've seen on GSMA in ages." yeah after all the boring devices like Z Flip and Oppo Find N, we FINALLY have a phone that has mildly better performance and incrementally better than it's last generation that everyone was waiting for!

"You can tell it was designed by a team of people who is freed from sales targets." yeah because Sony is doing for the betterment of humanity. No, it bets on their phones being bought by fanboys like you who would defend it even if they released a literal brick for 1000 dollars.

"Just hope they hired in the logistics dept so I can get one before 2023" that's one thing you absolutely will not have to worry about, Sony fanbase has been declining so hard (including me, who owns Xperia 5 II at the moment) that unless they made literally 5 pcs of this phone, everyone will get one.

SpiritWolf, 12 May 2022Reality check is really needed here. 'Way ahead' ... moreYou're so blind. Did you read the review? The 5.2x optical zoom has poor image quality. The S22 Ultra has a 10x optical zoom with higher image quality. It also comes with a stylus, has a bigger and brighter screen, and has better battery life. It's also cheaper. Now I can buy an S22 Ultra 256 GB for about $1,100. I don't know the price of the Xperia 1 IV in USD, but it shouldn't be lower than $1,400.

Tann Hauser, 12 May 2022Nothing good in using for ex 100 mpx sensors either. Most ... moreQuad bayer sensors have a separate readout circuit for pixel binning, meaning the processor only has to process 12MP even if the sensor resolution is at 48MP. Extra resolution will be useful once you start cropping in, achieving good quality 2x lossless zoom if one employs good processing algorithms.

Sony is sticking to 12MP because higher pixel count will sway some of the potential customers away from its own compact digital camera lineup. Sony has no reason not to use quad bayer sensors on its phones if not for its camera division, since they can be equipped with better autofocus mechanism than traditional bayer sensors, while not affecting the readout speed or signal to noise ratio significantly. Xperia 1 IV could have done everything it does with quad bayer sensors, but Sony just decided not to.

Most processing power wasted to crunch it down to a usable format, and some less for adding the usual computational photography postprocessing.

Sony is at least adding additional sensor capabilities like object tracking and Eye AF, due to increasing read out speeds of them 12 mpx.

I Heard theres a 200 mpx mobile sensor upcoming. WtH will it benefit in any way to mobile photography, other than more processing power wasted for crunching that data to usable media format?
