Anonymous, 12 May 2022You seem to be targeted. I wasn't talking about you. I... moreOf course its about popularity and Sony cant keep up with the competition. Heck Sony phones dont even sell at their home country Japan.
Since Sony is all about enthusiasts and not popularity, why remove the headphones and charger that they were giving on previous year model?
Why did Sony remove the Headphone jack till 2018s Sony Xperia XZ3?
Whats more embarassing is that Samsung mid range models like A53 have better software support than Sony flagships.
Go check out the new Xperia 10 IVs specs and price to see that Sony doesnt even know what their target audience is/wants....

AnonD-1049375, 12 May 2022I am curious to know how many people will keep phones for m... moreLongevity is not only about those that buy the phone day one.
Its also for people that buy the phone later on when its heavily discounted or used, and of course better longevity=higher demand and resale value.
Thats why iphones are so popular and android phones not so much especially the older devices.
Slower software updates/support and optimization.

Anonymous, 12 May 2022I'll tell you what, pixels don't mean everythingThere is nothing good about using 12MP for 4 consecutive years either. I know that Google, Apple did this as well but, again, nothing's good about it, no progress.

Fearghast, 11 May 2022OK, it took them 4 generations to fix most of the issues. ... moreYeah, for a Sony product this is okay - I mean, what can you _really_ except from them? Slowly getting closer to rivaling devices to make them less disappointing to the people that are willing to buy these. Maybe after 4 more generations to get even with other flagships of that time. :)

Anonymous, 12 May 2022Any percent decrease is bad for products that aren't p... moreYou still dont get it.
New Xperias are not about popularity, but specific needs and customers. They ditched the popularity trap altogether.
Most other Sony hi tech products fall into the same category. Just look at their overall tech portfolio, its full of high end, non mass produced, expensive products. And they are all profitable, else they would not RnD them.
Heck, for ex, there is actually an extremely expensive 2600 bucks audiophile targeted Sony walkman on sale right now. I dont see them closing up the Audio/Video branch cause that product sells in just a couple thousands. At that price, its profitable, cause there is targeted market even for that.
Now I know many Sony fans feel enraged cause that buissness model causes unavoidable price hike of their best products, but thats just the way it is, and will be in future....hi end Xperias are and will be somewhat exclusive, specific customer targeted, non mass produced, expensive devices.
I personally dont need or would use any CinemaPro or MusicPro features, nor Optical zoom cameras, nor Pro Game Enhancer gaming features, nor live streaming capabilities, nor 120hz displays, and wouldnt merit any expensive Xperia for any of that.
But some people need and want those features, and merit these expensive Xperias by those capabilities.
I bought the expensive 5 II device, cause it was the only device that ticked all my needs: newest flag SoC, excellent camera with PhotoPro features and shutter button, no notch or punchole ruined screen, very good front stereo speakers, hi res sound headphone jack, expandable storage with no darn pin slots, very good daily and excellent longlasting battery life, and waterproofing. Added a bit of VideoPro there myself.
Any omission of the above mentioned feats, and I wouldnt be satisfied and wouldnt cash out for it.
Problem is, it was the only device on market that ticked all these boxes. And no, there was no better phone for same price out there IMO.
And I couldnt care less about other peoples boxes, and compares here. Its their own merit.

Another disappointing Sony device.
-No charger, headphones or even cable in the box but with same price as Xperia 1III.
-No mention on software updates(so probably 2years only).
-Major overheating/throttling issues
-gimmick 4K display
-Same boring design
To god damn high starting price with typical horrible Sony resale value
If you are a Sony fan and want to buy a latest Sony smartphone, just grab the previous Sony 1III on a big discount.
What a disappointing year in general for smartphones. Everything except realme GT pro 2 has been a huge letdown.

4k screen is probably the only thing differentiating the 5 from 1 series. Just get rid of that pointless thing and merge 5 with 1 series and sell this new flagship at a lower price!
And make a lite version of this flagship, with 778g or 870, same main camera and without wireless charging instead of underpowered 10 series!

Nick Tegrataker, 12 May 2022I must disagree with you on the battery life part - Even th... moreYes, the battery life is decent. Sony should stop using 4k screens, though. It isn't a selling point. The battery life should be good if Sony uses a 1440p screen. The phone doesn't use a 4K resolution in most cases anyway.

Anonymous, 11 May 2022It slows down after 80% to control temperature and preserve... moreI am curious to know how many people will keep phones for more than 2 years nowadays. And those who keep phones for more than 2 years, usually have cheap low-end phones and don't care at all about technology and so on.
Everybody is speaking about longevity of this and longevity of that, but I don't know anybody (who knows current trends and follows tech news), with phones older than 1-2 years. Even in here, a lot of people with Sony Xperia 1 III are saying they will buy the Xperia 1 IV as soon as possible. So, why talk about longevity then?
Is the same case scenario with Apple users. All the time they praise longevity support, but all the iPhone users I know have only 12 or 13 series models (nothing older than that).
Thus being said, why some users are laughing about people who own Xiaomi or Realme or whatever Chinese brand and change them after 1-2 years? They are doing the same with their Sony or Apple phones.
I would rather have a 65, 120 or even 150W charging phone and give it away after 2 years with 80% battery capacity, than a Sony, Apple, Asus or Google phone with very slow charging speeds, in the probability that I will keep it for 4 years.

Anonymous, 12 May 2022Really? Why? I can hide any notch in the settings.Sure. And then you lose screen's real estate, just to compensate for hiding the notch? Go ahead...

Me too, my xz2 failed rounded design and microphone fail, the xz1 boxy the best to hold , I had no choices and got the 5 III which is too dim, failed brightness, but rear cameras are good , Sony used to be the king of the flagship compacts
