26 March 2010
Sony Ericsson have been working on the X10 for quite a long time, taking the utmost care to make sure its software offers the best user experience possible. They wanted... Retested image and audio quality based on latest firmware

    Who cares about multi-touch?
Even iPhone users mostly use double tap to zoom in on things..

I think it also highly depends on what phone you're switching from.

The over intuitive-ness will never compare to iphone. That's because iphone is point and click, with no depth. I believe the advanced and indepth UI like X10's infinity theme will be very very good once you get used to it.

I'm gonna try it out in-store this coming week! =D Can't wait.

        Not confirmed, but its interesting.
Glad I could help with the playlist thing. I'm pretty anxious to see all the little menus in the phone. No reviewers out there are really spending time to dig into the UI. They breifly go thru it, and call it a review =/.

bummy, 18 Apr 2010Gordon, I don't get it. There's a Playlist option in Music... moreBummy: Good spot - SE support never picked up on this ... shows how good they are !

aNon: It's mainly the overall inuitive-ness of the handset ... right out of the box.

Importing contacts has been a NIGHTMARE. SE Sync has not worked and I was reluctant to set up a Google account. I tried importing via SD card but a glitch in the software only allows you to import one contact at a time ... not good when you have over 300 !

I ended up importing via Bluetooth - from some advice given to me by Vodafone support - again, because SE support had no solution.

I've already mentioned the Media player, however Bummy has solved the play-list issue. It's still a poor - basic - effort by SE's standards though.

Then there's the home screen which has no "floating menu". So, whenever you upload, say, an 8M portrait pic as your screensaver, the UI will still re-size the same to fit over the 3 virtual screens of your desk-top (one to the left and right of you main display). The result of which is a horrible, grainy effort with very little "image content" in the left and right screens.

          All-in-all a bit shabby.

              aNon:

The main drawback is it's lack of intuitive-ness. Now I'm no tech-head, but I'm certainly not an idiot.

I'm definitely of the opinion that the phone should be able to be worked out without a manual - this one definitely is not. There are too many "tricks" to learn befor you get anywhere close to customising the UI / display the way you would want it to be (then again, I suppose that may just be the Android platform as a whole).

Take the home screen for example ... it's split into three parts. So you'd think that by adding your own home screen picture, the 2nd and 3rd panels (to the left and right of the main screen) would "float" in / out of the main display. Not so ... any picture you add to your desk-top has to be sized for the 3 screens ... i.e. even if you were to upload an 8M portrait pic, the UI would still re-size it so that it is stretched over the 3 screens ... thus zooming in too much and making the overall picture grainy and unpleasant to look at.

I've already mentioned the music player below but the play-list issue seems to have been sorted out. It's still a poor effort - by SE's standards - for such a flag-ship device though (even though I think the audio is fine - whereas hundreds of people think otherwise).

Another MAJOR issue has been importing contacts. Sony Sync has not worked and I was reluctant to set-up a Google account for Google Sync. I tried importing from memory card, however a glitch in the software means that you have to import one at-a-time (whereas importing from SIM allows you to "import all"). I ended up sending via Bluetooth - advice given to me by Vodafone support - because, again, SE had no solution.

I could go on ... but these are the FIRST things that ANY purchaser would pick up on in the first 5mins ... and I - for one - find that particularly disappointing for such an expensive/over-hyped device ... made by a reputable manufacturer.

So, please see the original post as what it is/was ... namely a warning to others not to get swept along with the hype.

I for one did get swept along, and was totally immune to any such comments with regards poor SE performance, phone funcionality, marketing etc. before its launch.

This phone is SOOOO not what I was expecting. There is not intuitive-ness at all, and the further you delve into the phone's "innards" the more frustrating it becomes ... you can't even switch the phone off by "extended button press" without being given TWO reminders of imminent shut-down first (!).

And don't even start me on Mediascape and the fact that you can't create "self-playing" play-lists in BOTH the handset and Media-Go software packages ... the phone doesn't recognise play-lists per se and will play ALL of your Music library including ringtones etc. if it's ever set to shuffle ... I know, because I phoned SE support TWICE to confirm.

This is supposed to be a top-end end convergence device c/w top-end price to boot. While I agree that the build quality and design certainly is THAT, the rest of the phone barely does anything with a great deal of ease/class.

I should've never bought my g/f a 2nd hand iPhone 2G... as it's UI has severely biased anything else that I have picked up since ... and I HATE Apple !

The Desire has many limitations as well, as reports are now being to be alert to. So it is actually quite difficult now to know what to buy. Desperately frustrating that so much expectation is created, on many handsets, and then manufacturers fail to deliver.

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE IF YOU ARE CONSIDRING BUYING THIS PHONE AS A GREAT CONVERGENCE ITEM ...

I have been using this site for about 2 years now to suss out when and what new mobile device to purchase. I have always ben a Sony Ericsson "fan-boy" and was delighted when I heard the news about the X10. I even remained patient during all the launch delays and dismissed all the "bashers" points re: Sony's lacklustre portfolio and recent efforts.

I received the phone yesterday and can honestly say that it is a MASSIVE disappointment - so much so that it is now back in it's box and will be sent back to the retailer on Monday.

The failings of this phone are too many to mention here but trust me - THE ONLY PLUS POINT OF THE HAND-SET IS IT'S LOOKS / BUILD QUALITY.

If you are looking for an intuitive multi-media device which will delight the user / be the envy of his/her friends then PLEASE look elsewhere !

I will get back to anybody who posts back with questions re: the above - as far as I'm concerned I'd be happy to let the public know just how frustrating my 2 days with the phone were.

And I SOOOO badly wanted this hand-set to meet my expectations ...

And yes, 120mb is a MAJOR drawback since it's were you install apps. Trust me, it's definitely not enough. And to top it all, the battery is terrible. But the screen is good though with AMOLED. I'd still choose X10 over Desire any day.
