Nokia N8 review: Director of photography

12 October 2010
We’ve come to take Nokia for granted in the low end or the business class but it seems it has lost the knack for killer phones, run out of royal blood. It’s up to the Nseries to fix it all up. The Nokia N8 may just turn out to be the right cure. With that kind of hardware. Update, 08.02.2012: Symbian Belle update hands-on...

I think this Nokia is vastly superior to the Pixton 12 and iPhone 4. It's very mesmerising.

Ithink, only camera is good in this phone, but OS? Still same with other old symbian, browser same with s60v5 browser. So if you like photografi and video recording buy this phone, but if you like Install many apps and browsing on your phone with great browser witn Flash10.1 support, buy Froyo phone!

With great dynamic range and excellent low-light performance, lots of resolved detail, geometrically perfect lens and, pleasant, but not overdone colors..."
There's a bit exaggeration in those comments. Just look at the very last sample pic(bugs bunny balloon): lots of distortion and loss of resolution in the bottom corners(not so "geometrically perfect lens"), burned out highlights in the in middle of the picture(not so great dynamic range). And where are the low light samples; are those resolution charts supposed to be them? Come on guys.

The two taps in camera settings are there so the user can preview the setting change in the viewfinder. So for example with Flash settings there's a single tap since there's no way to preview the flash on the screen. However with e.g. the color tone, the first tap changes the setting and the change is visible on the viewfinder so the user gets a preview of what the setting changes. And then the second one gets rid of the setting view.

gsmarena the perfect review needed..... i already had in mind looking at the specification and everything that it was never to be competing with the koreans... but it was for the nokia fans for an upgrade .... :)

nokia will compete with the the koreans by releasing E7 and the N9 .. and then when meego comes ... everyone including W7 mobile will be blown away.. after looking at the W7 mobile interface it seems its similar to meego... lets see :)

            bye bye android

Anonymous, 13 Oct 2010... obviously' d one who made d phone review is a NOKIA FAN... moreYou can overexpose, oversaturate, downgrade n8's photo through photoshop to look like pixon12's if you want. Sadly, you can't upgrade pixon12's photos to look like n8's.

You guys should be worried. It's an indication samsung's corrupting your mind. ;)

The koRngear, 13 Oct 2010over rated device with overrated comments. Sure it wins han... moreMuch of the OS review was about the parts where Sym3 is catching up. There are lots of areas where Symbian has always been ahead though. Proper multitasking and customizability to name few..

From that viewpoint it seems really good actually. I feel the things mentioned are quite minor to me. Browser is the only bigger gripe I have and Nokia has promised a fix to that soon.

Good review. It's true that N8 doesn't want to compete with the likes of SGS & iPhone4. They're in a different category altogether. I admit that Symbian^3, even with its improvements cannot match Android and iOS. While android and iOS have great visual effects and smoothness which are a real treat, I'm not looking for eye-candy on each and every screen. I wish to use my phone, not play with it. A simple and non-lagging multi-tasking experience is what I'm looking for in my smartphone; along with a fantastic camera. And the N8 seems to accomplish that quite very well. Audio clarity is another must-want feature for me. Even that is accomplished. I wish the QWERTY bug be fixed, but thats quite it. I dont even use the web browser very often. Anyway Opera Mini should come to the rescue, at least for the time being. Even the pricing is fair i guess. So I think the N8 should cater to my needs quite well. Thank you Nokia! I hope future usability of Symbain^3/Symbain^4/Meego improves as well as is market-competent. Although I'm quite very happy with the N8! Cheers!

over rated device with overrated comments. Sure it wins hands down in camera section but getting narrow minded and calling other OSs just does not seem normal.

Question: How come you point out N8's battery life as one of its disadvantages when another site with excellent reputation (techradar.uk) thinks that its battery utilization is years ahead of competition.. There seems to be some incosinstency here. Who is right..??

Question: Since the introduction of the 5th symbian iteration through 5800xm I 've read so many times about the double tap inconsistency or nonsense or what ever you call it. Double clicking on pc's double tapping on moblile screens. The other way would be inconsistent to what we are all used. What is it you find so weird about double tapping is really a mystery to me. I mean really what is your problem?

Opinion: Symbian is the most serious and mature choice out there by far. Froyo is catching up and ios has a long road ahead. Surely, an iphone is nice to use but its target group should be and mostly is teens and kids who like toys; huge industry indeed and a nice way for apple to make lots of money.

Finally, if I may, I wonder how can you stand such a control by your telephone companies and I refer to the american public. Locked phones, what is this? How can you stand it? Are you really used in such a manipulation? It is almost unheard in europe especially in the southern part of it with the exception of your "friends" in uk. There are android and ios apps already sending personal info to servers without the user knowing it as I 've read in an independent research. Some believe america tries to built os's that way in order to be easier to spy and control the public. As far as I am concerned I think I would pay much attention to such researches. A second thing is that thing about dropped calls. Well, I live in Athens, Greece which is quite a big city, and I have used all three available carriers and I have never experienced such a thing, neither have I ever heard of anyone complaining about it. What is going on in usa who is supposed to be world tech leaders? Users are paying good money to stand it. They shouldn't. Come on this unbelievable, expand the net to decrease it. You hear at&t..??
Last but not least, obviously, usa wants to sell its own products both hw and sw and not european and economic and political friends from asia -like south korea for instance (samsung, htc, lg etc) are helping them to do so. In the end, unfortunately, as everything else, it all comes down to control and money.

Thumbs up for symbian and down for those "control freaks" of apple and/or google. Think before you give your money to those people!

me, 13 Oct 2010Seeing all the crops i honestly think there's no difference... moreYou're seriously blind, man. I mean, look at the dam*ed trees, the leaves, whatever. There's no discussion. Like.. hands down the N8 is better than anything else that's been seen before.

The pixon's images are all saturated and artificially sharpened (you know, extremely white borders around everything), and well.. they just lack detail. Mostly on very bright or just a bit dark areas.

I think this was a good and well thought out review from gsmarena. Result was what I expected, the new king of cameraphones with a large margin and awesome media device.

This was the first release of Sym3 so I'm not at all surprised there are still few problems. Good thing is that Nokia seems to be aware of them.

I think Swype keyboard is already available from Nokia betalabs and Nokia has promised a new QT based browser soon, it just couldn't make it to N8 release.

There is no such thing as a perfect phone, and GSMA was careful to say that the N8 is not meant to directly compete with the absolute best of the other brands.

I was happy with the evolution from 6280 >> N95 8GB >> N97 Mini as it was a case of "more of the same, but better" each time. Looks like Nokia has continued that trend, and I for one look forward to grabbing one when Voda Australia starts offering them at the right price.
