Galaxy Camera vs. 808 PureView: Shoot 'em up

16 January 2013
So, this may as well be the first against the last of their respective kind. Nokia would gladly try and sell you PureView in various wraps and Android-powered cameras are not unheard of, but a shootout like this...

It seems both of these devices fall short in key areas.
The Samsung takes photos that fall short of its competition, other compact cameras.
The Nokia falls short in its smartphone credentials. The only positive is the camera, but with no optical zoom and dodgy macro, hmm.
I'm not sure where these devices are supposed to fit. Anyone who is passionate about smartphones or photography will give them a wide birth.
Anyone out their, please enlighten me.
As for the review. Excellent. It's like good old fashioned TopTrumps.

"But we won't be surprised either if connected cameras do to cameraphones what Android did to Symbian."

Are you serious? Why would anyone want to carry two devices around when you can manage nicely with just one? 808 has proven that it's possible to get along with just one device in your pocket. Instead of two (or three or five).

        All,

I own the 808 since it was on the marked and I'm really impressed by the picture quality. You can find my pictures (all taken by the Nokia 808 PureView) on my flickr page:

In nokia 808 if u set the video setting contrast to the lowest and reduce the framerate to maybe 25 or less, then adjust the xposure to suit the light condition and zoom a little while shooting, u will get a lowlight video shot that looks like daylight. Amazing, really.

In what parallel universe are these two on level at 2x zoom when you can clearly see that Galaxy Camera still makes average pics and is not even remotely close to 808 quality???

GSMARENA: Dimension is full dimension, unless you can carry or use galaxy camera without lenses. Even that Samsung inform 19mm deep, the correct measure of this device is 34mm deep, more than double of Nokia 808. The specification of Galaxy Camera must be corrected by Gsmarena and Samsung, otherwise is a misinformation.

Wait a minute! Why are these two devices being compared? They're completely different. The 808 is a phone 1st and a camera 2nd. The camera selling point is an additional bonus. The Galaxy Camera is strictly meant to be just a camera, that's its sole purpose.

                                      This is a silly review.

Both are for Niche markets. The camera with Android is obviously going to be more successful unless Nokia can achieve the same with a Windows phone.
