Galaxy Camera vs. 808 PureView: Shoot 'em up

16 January 2013
So, this may as well be the first against the last of their respective kind. Nokia would gladly try and sell you PureView in various wraps and Android-powered cameras are not unheard of, but a shootout like this...

Why? How can the GSM Arena do a test / review with one of the competitors wearing a software so outdated? Belle FP2 is here for more than 3 months! And after that the 808 has received a major update for solely for optimization.
Why the Galaxy Camera needs this advantage?

What I found odd was that despite the clear victory of 808, their quality was mitigated in the final balance.

You said that the Samsung lens are poor and Carl Zeiss are great, without anything to support what you are saying. That's typical attitude of a fanboy.
Also, I have a nokia N9, with carl zeiss lens and I love nokia phones, but I really hate this kind of attitute.

Wow, I haven't thought the 808 would be that much better than the Galaxy Camera. It practically kicked its butt badly in daylight.

As of low light settings, 808 chose 1/8 seconds which is too much exposure time, the GSMArena guys should have risen the ISO a bit so the shutter time would be shorter, like 1/20 or so, otherwise there are big chances to move/blur the picture. Or if you want to compare quality of the sensor, just put it on a tripod. 808 requires a little tweaking for great results in low light with no xenon. Anyway, you can safely set it to ISO 400 and still get a great picture, even ISO 800 is pretty good.

Galaxy Camera is too big to fit in pocket. Pureview 808 you still can use it everyday.

The galaxy camera is better suited for everyday situation. Zoom, image stabilisation and decent night mode will give you decent enough pictures to show off on facebook. A secondary camera for professional photographers? Would it be cheaper and more convenient to buy a decent point and shoot? We would need a comparison between the galaxy camera and the olympus/ canon blah blahs to determine that.
In terms of image quality (in decent lighting), i reckon the pureview wins hands down. The oversampling is clearly a must have for compact point and shoots. I don't know why nokia haven't tried bringing a series of cameras to the market that uses this tech!

I will recommend the Nokia 808 for those who wants an all in one device with emphasis on good camera.

As for the Galaxy Camera I will only recommend it to those who still find it difficult in this day and age to part with their 3310. It would be the perfect combination. A trusty tank of a phone in your right pocket and a smart camera on your left.

For others who already have an Android smartphone the Galaxy Camera will just be a dead weight.

Just the shear fact that a cell phone is being compared to a camera says everything about the pureview on its own! considering the size of the pureview and its capabilities, it is by far more impressive. And the amount of noise in the sample pictures of the galaxy camera is disgusting.

anyone who doesn't admit that the pureview 808 is outstanding innovation is an arrogant twit... even nokia haters admit that nokia did a fine job with this phone. It true engineering and innovation to fit such a large sensor with such a low 'f' number in a camera of this size.. not to mention the over sampling and extremely powerful xenon flash in a small area.

                                ....hail nokia.

Much as Sammy would like you to think, the Galaxy Camera is NOT a smartphone. It is just Android being slapped into a mediocre point-and-shoot camera. It is extremely misleading for Sammy to position this as a smartphone when it is not. Taking this analogy to the extreme to show how stupid it is, if a Hyundai car uses Android for its entertainment/navigation, they could call it the first smartphone that can drive you from Point A to B!
