I guess expectations are different for some people.
Some people happy with the X1 and some are very disappointed. I guess the reference also important.
If someone did not have a good phone since 1999 :) well that case X1 may be a fantastic phone :)
Typical complaints:
- reception problems (GSM and WiFi!)
- battery: poor performance, overheating
- cracked case
- low ring volume
- lousy speaker
- poor camera
http://www.slashgear.com/sony-...ing-2927945/
You type in cracked case X' into a search and you will see...
- slow performance
- hang ups
and some even go further:
˝˝ The Biggest High-Tech Flops Of 2008 ˝˝
Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
˝˝It may have been the most eagerly awaited telephone of the year... and it may well have been the most disappointing telephone of the year, too. Introduced in February with (almost) operational prototypes, the phone has only just become available in stores. Its “revolutionary” Windows Mobile interface was not only slow, but it also wasn’t any more functional than other operating systems from HTC, Samsung or Asus. And since there’s only one Windows Mobile model from Sony Ericsson, developments
for the proprietary interface, quite naturally, are scarce. What was supposed to be the ultimate smartphone is at best only passable, and at worst a total failure.˝˝

E-mail is considered data, and I don't get charged for that. I also can use the Yahoo messenger, and my email programs at no extra charge. It is when they 'KNOW' that you have a smart phone is when you get charged extra, for example, when you buy one from the service provider. I understand that smart phones may use more data while surfing the net, than a regular phone. I plan to use my Wi-Fi at home, and the internet from my provider, while out and about, if this is how they can tell you have a smart phone. Or, does the phone transmit something for the service provider to find out? I mean it is unlocked, not branded, so could they tell what kind of phone you are using?
If they had the phone I would not mind so much, but if I have to pay full price, and already have unlimited internet, and for personal use, what's the point?

I am in South Africa and the X1 does not down load mail here. (pop3) Our local Sonyericsson office say that they know of the problem. So; here I have an office phone that can not download mail. I gave it back for a refund.
The rest of the phone is pretty cool.

The questions in my post of 14Jan2009 still remain unanswered. Someone did point me to the xda-developer site, but I couldn't find what I was looking (probably need to dig more) But yes, I'd really appreciate if someone could give me some simple responses to my queries:
1. Is there a way to backup the complete phone including all applications - like it is possible to do for the P1i using the Sony Ericsson Phone Suite? I remember I could do that for my old HP iPaq running Windows PocketPC using ActiveSync. The "backup/restore" feature seems to have been removed in the recent version of ActiveSync (i.e v4.5).
2. Can someone tell me what happens if the battery on the Xperia dies completely? On my iPaq, if that happened, and if the internal backup battery is also dead, the PDA would loose all data and get reset to factory default. (That's why I needed to run backups regularly for that).
3. Can we show the date/time for RSS feeds? And identify if an article has been read or still unread? My P1i had these features for the builtin RSS reader. Didn't find these on the X1.
4. Also, is there anyone using a good app to monitor stocks? (Free?) The one on TouchFlo was great, but I removed TF3D 'coz it made my X1 very unstable.
Thanks!

SILV3RF0X, 22 Jan 2009Yes mate ure service provider will continue to honor the un... moreWhy would Direwolf get charged separately for emails? I think he wont. All he has to do is configure his gmail or any other imap/pop email onto his new X1. And the data downloaded because of this email is just that - "data"! And that's all free on his package.
Ya, if there's something smarter involved, like Blackberry Connect, he might get changed. I have never used Blackberry so dont know.

I have an 'off the wall' question, my service provider charges extra for the use of internet service on smart phones. I now have unlimited service on the internet on my plan with the W760. Now if I change from a Sony W760 to an unlocked X1, would they be able to tell that I have a smart phone?
I don't want to pay an extra $30 a month for internet if I don't have to, and not after going broke buying this phone. Any suggestions would also be helpful.
Thanks!
:-)

Where did gsmarena get the 800+ hour of standby??!!
After a full charge, I did about 2 mins of web browsing over wi-fi then the handset was left in standby for around 6 hours. The battery has go down by to 90%.
I'll be putting the battery through it's paces today and post here later on to show my results...
