I've been asked the same question many times, and that is 'Which next-gen device'? Sitting in front of me now I have the Omnia, the Diamond, the Touch Pro, the X1 and i've also spent some time with the Treo Pro. For me, it's a choice between the Omnia and the X1... yes - i'd take the X1 over the Touch Pro. Wo without realising it, I guess i've declared that the X1 is at least the new king of the keyboarded device tree, even if I am having trouble choosing between it and the Omnia for the overall crown!

I think the X1 will do well both here and over the pond. Having another big name on board the WinMo train is certainly a good thing.
Hats off then to Sony Ericsson...

    DESIGN:
Extremely good construction with very fine materials. Clever combination of metal and plastic in the right place (they say aluminum, specs say steel). The slider mechanism glides like “Soft butter”. Screen resolution only found on Touch HD and Toshiba Portege. Razor-sharp burn display. Keyboard keys somewhat slippery, but the size of the keys and the arrangement is very good for writing. Keyboard illumination is very bright.

    CAMERA
3.2 Mpx is average but is the best of other 3.2 mpx cameras. Pictures are sharp and colors are intense. Selective focus sharpen the objects and diffuse the background in “almost artistic blur”. True full VGA resolution at 30 frames/s completely smooth and without streaks. The media gallery slides as smooth and fast as the iPhone.

    MENUS and OPERATION.
Most applications are quick and smooth to respond. Switching between applications is faster than Diamond and Pro. Panels can create personalized environments. More Panels can be downloaded or develop. Some Panels durig certain operations are sluggish. Maybe an updated ROM will improve them.

    VOICE QUALITY
Is OK but much more pleasant than the shriek frequency of other models. Reception is excellent. No dropouts.

    BATTERY
The strongest among touch-phones. Using various functions it may last up to two days. Talk time 6 hours. In GSM even more. Casual user can last a whole week.

    CONCLUSION
Impressive with many superlatives. Very responsive highest resolution touch screen at par with iphone and better than all the other competitors. Good camera with many features. Battery ensure long use. Panels not yet mature but updates will help. Lack of autorotation. The Sony-Ericcson Xperia X1 without a doubt is a new reference by which other must be measured.

Picture quality was pretty good. Colors looked almost true to life and while we thought there was a bit of softness to the image, we were still able to clearly identify objects in the photo. Video quality was also good.
The battery life is, for me, the best I have used in a long time. Being a Diamond user, this has been a refreshing change, going a fully day with normal use ie. 2 hours of calls, a bit of web, 20 texts or so etc.etc. would result in half battery left at the end of a 14 -16 hour day. If only the diamond......
The 3.5mm jack is a welcome addition and allows personal choices of headset / headphones connection.

I have been using this phone on a daily basis for about 2 weeks or so, and I find it very easy to live with, the speed, clear screen (albeit recessed) and quality of the device makes it very enjoyable. The battery life for me was the best bit; the ability to switch about in and out of the different panels was fun. I am sure that given time out in the wild, development in these areas, will prove that this is probably one of the all time classic devices.

Anonymous, 11 Dec 2008phone is not worth usd 700 when nokia is selling 5800 for 4... moreyes, You are CORRECT! :)

              That is my point.

and the 5800 was released later.
It has been out and no major problems with it while X1 seems (someone said) already canceled.

But the same (like 5800) good feedback about Omnia and HTC HD.

Any of the three models outsell X1 big time!

I have owned my X1 for 3 weeks now. I purchased for 299 euro with first month service free(75Euro)in France with one year unlimited G3+/mail/tv/internet. I had several issues with software at first. Not just with getting to know WM, but mostly with 3rd party software that had not caught up to the X1's advanced tech, such as vodafone.

After flashing rom with generic uk and changing keyboard back to azerty so it matched layout all of my technical issues begain to vanish.

I gave myself crash lessons in WM. Plus I added a few items like Wayfinder(europe),MASPware GuardMobile, patch for pop-up notification, xperia tweek 2.0, GB-SOFT GPRS & Audio Tweak, and 16gb microsd (I will upgrade to 32gb max) and my X1 is now a superstar.

The main difference I found in experience before and after dumping all that Service provider cr*p. Most of all the SP software found the easiest point of access (or path of least resistance), instead of running on MY device the way I wanted it to. So I just dumped it all and manually entered what I needed to connect and left the rest out.

I basically turned my X1 from a phone with mp3 (like the ipod) back into a small portable computer which is what it was build for. By the way if you are just looking for a phone with mp3,mp4, email, and to check out a few web sites the X1 may not be the phone for you; as the X1 is so much more. You could just keep it simple and go for Iphone. The I stands for idiot proof!

I do not have any of the issues some people have written about here. I had my SE P910 for Five years and it was great. This X1 is an absolute ROCKSTAR and I would like to thank SE for going the extra mile and taking us to the next level. You SE guys complete me :)

I do my business on my Lenovo.

                      I need a phone for:
                      - music
                      - may be video playback

                      - making calls (with good reception!!!)
this is hard requirement for the X1 :)

I do not do PDF, Text editing on a phone.

I do not even surf the NET on the phone - 3-4 inch screen is just too small.

I think the best you can do is:
                      check emails.

the rest of the net stuff is just ridiculous.

There are several good tablets with 8.9-12" screen - and they are great!!

                        5800 vs. X1
I already made this clear to everybody

                        no comparison :)

                        the current price

less than 500 USD vs. 750-800 USD

                        reliable vs. nothing but trouble

working OS (Symbian) vs. buggy Os (WinMo)

                        ...
I could go on but let mention the trigger point of the SE fans

                        16M color vs. 56K

                        and of course

can´t keep it on the shelves vs. low sales

5800 will be a big hit Worldwide.

It is sold many places for 350-400 USD!!!!!

Unfortunately, X1 did not live up to all or some of the expectations. IT is and was a huge disappointment for many of us who waited almost a year to get it.
We paid for this and now we can wait for the next one.

Hopefully, SE will release the X2 or X5 soon (Hikaru).

The ringing is not that bad, I had my phone in another room about 8mt away(no closed doors) the TV was on I still heard it ringing, please note I think it depends as well on the type of mp3, I put my favorite song and i heard it perfectly. The screen as I said before is just amazing, I have seen a couple of videos and they look fantastic. So far I did not have any problems with signal nor wi-fi issues. The phone opens applications easily and it is faster then my prevouis HTC Touch Cruise. The keyboad is very good I like it. I have the SPB panel at the moment and it work great. I love the fish panel it is a good one for the weekend. I am still not used to the optical mouse, but its more cause I forget it's there, the phone is so loaded that I tend to forget what to use, if touch, or mouse or keyboard....If you can afford it, go for it its definatly an XperiAnce....))
