Flashback: HTC One was a rebel with a unique camera and great speakers

05 April 2020
Remember the UltraPixel camera? It had only 4MP resolution, but those pixels were 2.0µm in size, much larger than the competition.

Best thing about this phone was the split capture feature. Would love to be able to do this on my Pixel 3. Does anyone know how to do this?

All S before S7 had poor battery endurance, before s6 they were cheap construction (worse then their own low end phones because not even Y and Pocket lose paint that easily ), slower than competition, 4K video stuck at 5 min.

Compared with its HTC rival, HTC One, Galaxy S4 had better screen, battery life, much better camera in daylight and slightly better gaming performance.

The only thing HTC ever did over the competition was the stereo speakers they introduced with HTC One and later removed for no reason whatsoever.

Bought the M8 when it was new. A decision I still regret making. Cost almost 800 euros, but didn't really offer anything to make up for the sky-high price. Used it for almost a year, that was more than enough. It was also the hardest phone to sell, even when it was practically in a like-new condition. Nobody really wanted to buy it, took over a month just to sell it.

I still have this phone and it still works! I replaced battery and camera a while back. My 7 yo daughter uses it now for kids games, photography & YouTube videos.
Best feature: Front facing beats audio speakers!

Bought this phone and it had a speaker/microphone bug (couldn't hear the caller and they couldn't hear me). Returned it for another one and it developed the same bug within a couple of weeks. Returned the second one, bought a Samsung S4 and never touched an HTC again.

Please let's all give HTC their WELL DESERVED RESPECT...they contributed immensely to the rise and were the first to hop on the Android train and sort of helping nudge the UI forward.
That said...HTC made some costly mistakes along the way, some of them they stubbornly clung to despite what fans and critics tried to see them change. No huge bezels, no smaller batteries, no huge price, no delayed release after announcement etc...no cutting corners.
Despite their temporal absence on the Android scene..they can still make a come back if they implement a two year strategy to climb back up. Either they start by making a very good Mid-range+ phone with decent specs and price it around $400--$500 OR make a very good flagship device with all the top specs and price it around $600 to under $800 to undercut all those highly priced flagships. For G-sake follow the earlier Oneplus model..fewer good phones a year with very attractive prices

[deleted post]That is not the point.

If company A spends $600 to make their phone and company B spends $600 to make their, does not matter if B sells more than A.
There is no rule that A has to sell for lower price than B.

Lame excuse used by Apple to overcharge their stuff.

For me it was a reversed story. With sense 5, I left HTC. Sense 5 stripped off all the good looks of sense UI. HTC butterfly was the last sexy phone from HTC until it run sense 4.5
Wish HTC comes back with the type of sense 4 user interface again.

Samsung is not premium brand, it is poor people brand.
Reason most of their stuff is low end/midrange portifolio

I personally was not a fan of this phone, but I did think it was better than the Samsung and Apple offerings at the time. Of course none of that matters because if you price near Samsung or Apple you will never make a sale. Xiaomi and Huawei have mostly close the gap by under cutting them. The companies that didn't (LG, HTC and Sony) are practically dead as far as mobile is concerned.

sadh, 05 Apr 2020I had no idea Nokia N8 was having such camera specs, in... 2010?That's right, 12MP with 1/1.83" sensor size and 1.75µm pixel size... ALL IN 2010! To put that into perspective, Sony's IMX586 and Samsung's GM1/GM2 sensor was only 1/2.0" and 0.8µm.
