Rumor: the Snapdragon 895 will be fabbed on 4nm Samsung node, the 895+ on 4nm TSMC node

05 July 2021
Leakster IceUniverse says that Qualcomm will split the orders between the two foundries. The Snapdragon 888+ stuck with Samsung.

Sort by:

If that really is the case, I'll wait for the 895+. TSMC always seems to have better fabrication processing than Samsung.

    Is below than 3nm possible?

jamalu96, 06 Jul 2021Because you were saying Qualcomm is increasing the clock sp... moreYes, there is performance increase but at the cost of heat and battery life which is pretty much the same as you'll get by overclocking the S865. My conclusion then is that the SD888 is just an overclocked SD865.

Anonymous, 05 Jul 2021Always buy phones with Snapdragon CPU. Others will disappoi... moreI wouldn't be so sure about that. Samsung and AMD is cooking up something cool. I doubt it will be inferior to Qualcom chips.

You forget or ignore the A78, 77, 76, 75 and X1 micro architecture.
The X1 is a power hungry core and with the Samsung's 5nm made it horrible. But still there is performance increase compared to Sd865.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2021You can obfuscate all you want but when the SD888 is provid... morethe 888 plus is just an overclocked version.
But 895 will have new X2×1+A710×3+A510×4 instead of X1+A78+A55.
And it will have arm V9 instruction set announced in march 2021 instead of armV8.
Also it will have higher transistors per area by using 4nm process.
As I said before both SD845 and 888 have same clock speed for the 1+3+4 setup and the Single core geekbench score is 520 VS 1150. These are 2.2X performance increase at the 'SAME 2.84GHZ CLOCK SPEED'

And I don't expect the 888+ or 895 will be any different. Qualcomm is not making any generational improvements in their chips.

Im happy with sd855 and will probably stick with it till sd900

Where are the 'overclocking' you were saying?
Only the 'Plus' varients using overclocked versions.(for the primary core and GPU)
Both the SD845 and 888 have the same (2.84×1)+(2.4×3)+(1.8×4) and because of no improvement as you said, so that 845 and 888 performs same.

And you skipped all the X1>A78>A77 things from the previous comments.

Well that's not going to happen. Both have different ip. Unless there's something changes in 895+ design which gonna make RnD cost high to design both chip on 2 nodes. If it just gonna be an overclocked version of 895, it will either be tsmc or Samsung.

The increased heat and power draw speaks for itself. It is merely an overclocked version of its predecessor with no improvement in efficiency whatsoever.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2021How so? It'll just be an overclocked 895 and the 895 w... moreSnapdragon 865 uses Cortex A77 cores for the 2.84Ghz core and 3 2.4Ghz cores. The 865+ had 2.96Ghz Primary core and 870 is using the primary cores at a clock speed more than 3GHz.
The SD888 have a 2.84Ghz Cortex X1 core instead of Cortex 77 in the SD865 and the other 3 cores are vased on Cortex A78 @2.4Ghz.
They are using Cortex A55 for the four power saving cores at 1.8Ghz.

Both these chips are using arm V8 instruction set(firstly introduced in Apple A7 with the iPhone 5S)

Meanwhile the upcoming successor to the 888 whatever it's name(SD 895/890) will have a primary cortex X2 core and 3 Cortex A710 cores and 4 power saving Cortex A510 Cores.
Also the upcoming Snapdragon will use the newer arm V9 instruction set.

Did you confuse it with SD 870? Because SD 888 has Cortex-X1 and Cortex-A78, and they're still clocked at 2.84Ghz and 2.42Ghz, where is the overclocking?
The GPU could be overclocked though, the frequency is very high, and I'm assuming it could even be the cause of overheating in SD 888, some people say it's because of Samsung's fabrication and some say it's because of the Cortex-X1 core, so whatever.
The SD 888+ is the overclocked SD 888, and SD 895 will use Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710, but Qualcomm acquired nuvia from what I remember, they could use in house cores, but you will call them overclocking again, like we can get better performance only by overclocking.

this is one way to decongest tsmc chip shortages outsourcing its production to other foundries like samsung.
