Weekly poll: are you using 5G on your phone?

23 January 2022
Recently launched phones typically support 5G and many carriers  already have 5G networks. But coverage is far from 100%.

Still, it doesn't mean that 5G is worse than 4G, because given how long 4G has already been around, it is already nearly being defeated by well-executed 5G networks around the world. Give them some more time and 5G will eventually make 4G a thing of the past.

Anonymous, 24 Jan 2022Watch Kurzgesagt https://youtu.be/FfgT6zx4k3QI just watched it again and read comments for 25 minutes and found a point that is easy to understand:

5G radiates at frequencies of about 30 GHz

Visible light radiates at frequencies of 420.000 to 700.000 GHz (or 420 to 700 THz)

I still using a phone without 5G support, since it is from April, 2018. But when I decide to replace the device, I'll definitely buy one with 5G support and will use the new network standard.

Telco here in SGP still uses basis of 'selected" Handset/Device support SA/NSA for their Telco. Buying a 5G unit doesn't guarantee that it will work for that particular 5G network. don't know is the Telco or Devices playing ping balls with users currently. LOL

The reason why some 4G is slow is because there were too crowded in that particular area. And 5G promise that can serve more user than 4G can.

So, 5G will eventually replace 4G, just like 4G eventually replace 3G.

                    1. Use internet
                    2. Do not use internet

For those who don't use internet 2G is already good enough.

But for those who use internet, there were an incentive to upgrade because if they use old phone, they can't open the "new" web site ir apps. So, 3G is pretty much not good for them now, and in 5-6 year 4G will not enough anymore.

My phone already 5G but in my country, not all place have 5G signal coverage.
So maybe need 2 years for 5G to cover all place.

The problem is the network coverage.
i see 5g name on the network but i don't see any speed increase ,the same happened with 4G and 3G implementation in my country, I'm waiting for a provider that actually cares for their business.

5G in my country is signal identification only as the speed is still trash. On speedtest I can only get 9 Mbps on full bar... No not Gbps, Mbps! I just turned off 5G on my phone (Xiaomi 11T).

When I can, always a nice surprise when I see it in the UK. But it's far from common (glares at O2) and I have a regional job so travel a lot! I usually see 4G only but at least that seems to be basically everywhere

5G not available in my area yet, my smartphone is 5G compatible, but I don't really care, my 4.5G connection is already as fast as my FTTH connection at home.

I couldn't tell any difference, so I switched to a cheaper carrier that's 4G only. The only thing I noticed is that the signal is more stable as my phone isn't struggling to pick up 5G signals dropping a perfectly good 4G signal every once in a while.

Honestly, I see 5G users in 2021/2022 being early adopters of something that doesn't have its infrastructure ready yet. Something that even when working perfectly doesn't add value to customers - I promise I couldn't tell 4G from 5G even if I had both side by side.

Not once did I ever get 20 mbps downloading from 5G. It's just a marketing ploy at this point. Maybe in a few more years, we'll see results. I'm on T-Mobile and they claim they have the largest 5G network in the nation and I still don't see it after 9 months using 5G phones on their network.

The jump from 2G to 3G was a joke. Yes, that's 32x faster but 2 mbps is joke to stream when YouTube was already big by 2006. There was 3.5G that came which had exceptional speeds. I'm only talking the earlier days of 3G. I didn't experience HSPA+ until 2010. I believe my iPhone 4 had it. The 5 was when iPhone finally got 4G.

4G seems to be the right balance of speed and efficiency. At least these days 10 years into it. 4G was a battery drain a decade ago. Now I can't live without 4G speeds. The knock on 3G was no calls and surfing the web at the same time. Was so annoying it couldn't do that. Long live 4G!

I moved to a country where I get 200 - 300 Mbps DL on LTE. I only got between 8 - 50 Mbps DL in my home country.
