It got me wondering: Apple is an American company, so it pays revenue taxes (and/or other) to America's treasury. So it's strange that US Senate want Apple to do something that likely will lessen its revenue (and thus the taxes) - unless US wants from Apple something that they can't just buy with money... 🤔

People are free to criticize companies, people are not free to force companies to change their policies if they are not harmful, and Apple's policies are not harmful, because no one is forced to buy Apple's devices. And if other companies' devices are "not better" - that's also not Apple's problem.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2022Do you understand that you don't need to sideload apps... moreDo you understand that once sideloading is available *others* may abuse it for you to circumvent various safeguards that are enforced through store policy (e.g., cataloging app types, testing, and consistency check over data collection) or even flat-out install spying software to track you (e.g., nosy employers or private investigators)? That is the tradeoff with Android, you can do so much nice stuff, but others can also abuse that power to do "not so nice stuff" to you if you are not careful.
The US government has been complaining about "how hard it is to spy on iPhones" for so many years. This is just the latest approach in a long roster of excuses to make it easier to break iPhone security; playing into the Android vs. iOS tribalism is a genius move, I've got to admit.

unsafe for us or for Apple revenue? give option for end-user. Apple can always tell us it's unsafe but it's our right to choose

No shit sherlock, driving a car is also "unsafe" to a certain degree. But we know really well that apple love to keep their user inside walled garden.
Apple should learn to give users "option". They could place a toggle somewhere deep inside setting to allow sideloading, that way average users won't "accidentally" activate it.
(Mac users can sideload any program they want, I don't see any legit reason to not allow iOS sideload apps)

We get it, Apple. You don't want people to sideload apps because you can't get that 30% fee from app developers who don't put their apps on App Store. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why Apple can be a trillion dollar company.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2022Agree with apple. Better safe than unsafe. But you are not safe if all your safety is outsourced to one party (the OEM). That's called having a single point of failure and no system is trully safe like that.
A safe profile includes a baseline safety profile (the one that Apple vanilla offers) and the ability to add your own on top if need be. Apple's unwillingness to allow official ways to modify their os even in the most basic of ways *actually* makes her platform less safe. Which is why all industry grade systems run on modified (for the purpose) Linux and nothing from a centralized point of failure like Apple or Microsoft or Google.
It's well known for decades that introducing a single point of failure makes a system unsafe in the long run, not safe. Apple knows that, their engineers are not dummies, they pretend ignorance because they are allowed to , and also because they expect their customers to not know how unsafe they make them be...
