Weekly poll: is the Asus Zenfone 9 the perfect phone for you?

31 July 2022
Small but powerful, with few compromises (though some might prove to be deal breakers). Is this the best small Android flagship?

Olympus Oms, 31 Jul 2022The size, yes. The android build, no. This +1.

Perfect phone with two massive flaws;

1. Stock Android which is shit.
2. Far too expensive.

Dear Asus, please, release a "lite/neo" version of this phone with snapdragon 7 gen 1 while keeping all the goodies. Would be a perfect upper midrange phone

Anonymous, 31 Jul 2022My money will always go to Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and... moreS22 and 6a aren't really in the same league, and pixels haven't been faring too well post pixel 5. S22's battery life isn't great, 5a overheats when using the camera, 6/6pro has garbo fingerprint sensor and 6a's is looking equally slow and has a bad screen refresh rate. Tensor is average and also heats up quite a bit, wont get into signal issues.

Just because you value brand loyalty over a phone's actual features and function doesn't make it 'nasty overall'. Doesn't seem you're the target demographic for the phone which is fair enough.. There are good, valid complaints about the Z9, but your reasons are kinda just brand preferences unless added to.

The size, yes. The android build, no.

I am fan of bigger screens. Too small for me. I like those 6.7 inches displays nowadays

              No sd card slot,no sale.
How many of you complaining about the length of updates keep a phone longer than 2 years anyway ?
As for 5 years of update life, exactly how many folk still run 5 year old phones ?
I do,cos phones really haven't got any better in years,a bit bigger,a bit faster, but nothing new,I like using stylus ,so I run a few Samsung note 4's.
Dirt cheap (£50) does everything I need a phone to do,and for the price of one new mid spec phone,I can buy 8-10 old notes, don't forget, they were the cutting edge of hardware when released,so it took a few years for mid spec phones to equal the performance of the notes.

It is rather expensive without a telephoto/telemacro.
But for a compact phone, I would get it easily.
So sad this thing never gets around the Middle East.

Considering limited volume, i would add zoom camera and remove wide angle one. Also undercreen or pop up frontal camera, please.

Decent flagship with so many one-hand gestures at 800euro still worth it , it could be lower but due to inflation & stuff , I'll be getting 256Gb variant

My money will always go to Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and maybe Apple iPhone, any other brand is of no interest to me. This Asus Zenfone 9 is pretty nasty overall. If I needed a new small phone, I'd be very happy with a Galaxy S22 5G or Pixel 6a. The iPhones mini and SE are great, but iOS isn't my favorite.

Perfect size and features plus 2 years of OS updates seem reasonable considering the device performance worsens over time. Using a S20 FE 5G and it was much better with the original firmware. Yes, Android 12 and One UI 4.1 are good but I am still waiting for a better seamless experience in Android ecosystem like Apple. They do control everything but it just works and every Android OEM ends up copying what Apple does 😑. Keeping a phone for 2 years is good enough with the pace with which tech is evolving now.

I am the only one here who doesn't like software updates? I mean when a phone is being released it is well-optimized to its current software version compared to the upcoming software updates, so why would I update my phone if it is working properly? It is better for me not to experience new features of newer software than to update my phone and suffer from bugs or planned obsolescence. The native software version of my phone will still work for the next few years even if I don't update it. My ROG Phone 2 is still on Android 9 and I'm fine with it.

On the other hand, with regard to the poll, I don't want to buy Zenfone 9 because my phone is still working. Should I buy a new phone someday, the Zenfones will be my 2nd option. My priority is still an ROG phone because of its front-firing speakers. But if future Zenfones will employ front-firing speakers, I will choose it over an ROG phone.

Don't put a headphone jack and claim it is good for outdoor activities and then skip the FM radio. It is essential for outdoor safety. Charging could be faster. But the rest is good.

                                    Why even care?

S21 from last year will get upgrades until Android 15/ One UI 7 and security patches until the beginning of 2026.

Meanwhile, this phone will ONLY get until Android 14. I mean Seriously???? Android 14 is literally launching next year.

Anonymous, 31 Jul 2022Yep. Android buyers expect a lot from their phones. All the... moreiPhones are not "more expensive". Sure, if you compare them to all the low end and mid end phones for 300€. iPhones just start at like 800€ and there is a lot of Android phones far beyond that price point and yet they still have terrible software support. There is just no excuse for Android phone makers to offer such lousy software support.

Anonymous, 31 Jul 2022People need to stop with this ridiculous obsession with upd... moreWhy? I have an iPhone that'll soon be 4 years old and I'm getting all the goodies and all the security updates. Why would I expect anything less from another phone that costs the same yet only gives me 2 years of updates? Because of this, only Android phone that I'll even consider is something from Samsung. 4 years of major OS updates and extra year of security updates only is industry leading in Android segment. And Samsung really means it with security updates, often beating even Google Pixels with it. Now, sure, that's only on flagships where Galaxy A models get less, but Zenfone 9 is also a flagship and ASUS is anything but a clumsy newcomer. They've been in the tech industry for decades and years in smartphones segment in particular. Just making a good small phone is just not enough if they basically abandon it after 2 years.

I generally have good experience with ASUS and use a lot of their products, but their phones just never cross my radar because of this. In a way I want the Zenfone 9 as I'm planning on going to Android again to try it out once again, but not with such lame software support. It's why I've gone to iPhone in the first place few years ago. Not gonna make same mistake that has been ruining my experience for past decade.
