Weekly poll: how much RAM is enough?

03 December 2023
Some phones these days have as much as 24GB, with others you can't get more than 8GB. And what's with virtual RAM, anyway?

[deleted post]yes it is a company. but their phones lags like memeui with 8gb ram. feels like using 3gb ram phone..

you have to suffer, 04 Dec 20238gb may be enough. but for vivo, it isn't.Because of system? You have what model? I'm interested in this phones spectrum

And cuz some crashes. I tested that before on 4 GB RAM phone. Thought that would help in apps when you EOL. But no games man. Also not good to use this because I'm not sure but I think VRAM will use some of your phone CPU power. But I understand thatyou want to use your phone amap.

I've been seeing a pattern recently. My 4GB RAM phone with equal Virtual RAM would crash when running super heavy apps like gaming. I believe it is due to switching RAM data in & out of storage due to Virtual RAM. Never had the crash issues with Android 10 before. Cannot turn it off since Samsung did not give that option in Android 12.

8GB is more than enough for the average user, 12GB is good for heavy tasks like emulation (which is my case) I got a 16GB 1+ 10T because I want to keep it for another 3 years and I want to make sure it will still run everything decently.

8 gb sounds good enough for daily use. However, virtual ram is bad because it will wear out the storage a lot faster than normal

Or use blocking, battery restrictions. No root needed. That's what I like on android. Now on F5 12 gigs when I check I have from 7.9 to 9.1 gigs ram free. But I think that doesn't really matter for now. And ofc I don't use virtual RAM it unnecessarily using internal storage.

8 gb of free ram is enough, with android os taking out about 4gb, yeah 12 gb minimum

But apart a short demo, no games released on Android showing Ray tracing yet

Ok I will start from the beginning. RAM is already very important in pc, consoles and ofc phones and everything else. Just look what Ngreedia did with RTX GFX. They already struggle with RAM on current games. PS5, XBOX are unified systems DEVS actually du a good job(accept this Xbox small) Now we have AI era and we just started. Also in phones if you are aware. This year 8 gigs. Next 12-16. 2025 24-32 as a minimum. AI need a lot of RAM. Why du you think Hopper is so much I'm demand. Power and HBM. Phones wil properly have something like HBM in next 3 year. I lough at comments saying 12 gigs is ok for next 10 years.

Quite honestly apps and programs have become bloated and slow. In the early days when you didn't have alot of ram programmers worked with what little they had. Program coding so efficient and fast loading with the processors they had. Personality from 2000 onwards (Windows 2000/XP) programs got fat, bloated and loaded slower than earlier 95/97 programs. That bloated nature continued as technological advances sped up in the processor and RAM departments and you didn't need to be as efficient as the hardware did the heavy lifting. Even today a Chrome tab can be 100-200mb. You used to have whole programs for that much.

Personally I would say 6GB - 8GB is still fine, but I had to choose 8GB because the way the poll is broken down.

                                        I don't have any problem with my S23U, but I don't like mobile games. Sometimes I realize that I didn't close 10-15 apps 😅
