Top 10 most popular reviews of 2019: Q4

Ivan, 01 January 2020

We are taking a look back at the phones that excited you the most in 2019 and the reviews that got you reading. We are now at the final quarter - you can also check out the 10 most popular reviews of Q1, Q2 and Q3.

Welcome to the final installment in our top reviews of the year recap. The months October, November and December had just 3 flagships and were dominated by upper-midrangers.

The most popular review of Q4 was the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, which was characterized by snappy performance from the Helio G90T chip, a versatile 64MP camera and outstanding battery life. We didn't much care for the macro and ultrawide cameras.

In second place we have the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 - the first phone to wield a 108MP main camera. It also has two telephoto cameras - 2x and 5x - great battery life and a capable chipset. We didn't find anything majorly wrong with this phone, but we'd lie if we said we're not waiting for a Snapdragon 855 Mi Note 10 Pro.

The Realme X2 Pro came to butt heads with the OnePlus 7T and in our very popular review we found it to be quite the capable phone. Its big OLED screen is bright and quite smooth at 90Hz, its main camera is quite good, and its 50W wired charging is bonkers! And you know what you won't get on a OnePlus - a 3.5mm headphone jack. However the Realme X2 Pro lacks expandable storage and its ultrawide and tele cameras were lackluster.

The Pixel 4 review was very popular, even if the phone itself is a bit divisive. It had a slightly larger screen and a slightly smaller battery than its predecessor, a telephoto camera when most people wanted an ultrawide, a 90Hz screen that wasn't 90Hz below 70% brightness, but none of that mattered when the cameras got down to shooting - they're that good.

The Redmi Note 8 joins its Pro sibling in our list thanks to its impressive battery life, up-to-date MIUI 11 software, big and bright screen with high contrast. We found its performance subjectively worse than the Redmi Note 7's though so that wasn't ideal.

Huawei released its Mate 30 Pro flagship on schedule, despite lacking proper Google Services support. As is usual for a Huawei flagship the Mate 30 Pro had excellent battery life, super-fast wired and wireless charging, a superb main camera and outstanding ultrawide camera, but the aforementioned Google Services issue is a deal breaker for most people living outside of China.

Next up is the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite/CC9 review. We liked the big OLED screen, the battery life and the excellent camera. However at the time of the review it cost as much as the Mi 9T, which is a better proposition.

Our revamped smartphone buyer's guide was a very popular feature and is a special one at that. It's an ongoing guide, which we'll update as the months go by to include the absolute best deals around. We often hear the question "what phone should I buy" and this is our definitive answer.

Finally, we close the list (and the year) with the Samsung Galaxy A50s hands-on review and the review of the Nokia 7.2. We'll hopefully have more time with the Galaxy A50s in 2020 to do a proper test of its battery life, audio quality and speakers, but found it a capable device overall.

The Nokia 7.2 has a nice, clean design, nice and clean Android One software, but lacked great battery life, a competitive chipset and its camera was only okay.

We now look forward to 2020 as it will surely bring more and even better phones for us to test. Stay tuned!
