Percentile rank - definition

Glossary

Since we maintain one of the most detailed mobile device databases, we were able to come up with a new way of visualizing where a particular device stands in comparison to the other devices in its product category.

We can now provide you with the precise percentile rank of the some of the key specs we list for each device.

This new feature gives you a glanceable information about how the device ranks regarding:

  • Weight: the percent of devices which have the same or lower weight (lower means lighter);
  • Thickness: the percent of devices which have the same or lower thickness (lower means slimmer);
  • Screen resolution: the percent of devices which have the same or lower screen resolution;
  • Screen size: the percent of devices which have the same or lower screen size;
  • Battery capacity: the percent of devices which have the same or lower battery capacity;
  • Endurance rating: the percent of devices which have the same or lower battery endurance rating (higher means better performance comparatively);
  • Benchmark performance: the percent of devices which have scored the same or less in the respective benchmarks (higher means better performance);

There are two things to remember when you consider the device ranking.

First, we only rank the devices within their respective product category – for instance, we are not ranking phones against tablets or smartwatches.

And secondly, the percentile ranking is dynamically calculated, and it takes into account the devices released in the past two years.

The first place you would see these percentile rankings is in our recently launched time-saver editions of popular reviews but in the future, we hope to expand these visualisations across the website.
