I don't see much quality in the photos. I've actually had a pixel, you zoom into the photo and you see the makeup over an ordinary camera.

same crap camera as pixel 5
it's time for google to upgrade hardware and use a large sensor
12mp 1/1.1" :D sensor but not that high res ones. for wide and ultrawide.

AnonD-994853, 24 Apr 2021Hdr+ is now behind apples smart hdr, and other chinese phon... moreAlso note that some companies use machine learning for noise reduction. This could lead to less noisy results, but this will also lead to results that don't show the truth as machine learning only guesses.

It is true that there is smartphone main camera hardware that captures more than three times as much light per time as the Pixel 5. Better hardware will definitely help regarding noise, but one of the main issues are Google's algorithms since the Pixel 3 (Night Sight takes too long and produces blurry photos, no HDR+ enhanced mode since Pixel 4, noise reduction got more aggressive, Pixel 5 has more blown out highlights than Pixel 3 in HDR+ enhanced mode, Pixel 3 suffers from dead pixels when you zoom, worse white balance than Google Nexus 5x, white balance presets have been removed, terrible machine learning zoom, etc)

Google needs to seriously improve its camera hardware. Pixels look as ugly as ever, and most hardware is mediocre on its phones. But its camera sensors need a complete and absolute overhaul. Please stop the same 12MP sensors from generations ago. I am also surprised that google hadn't worked on the CFA to improve detail and sharpness, substantially.

AnonD-994853, 24 Apr 2021Hdr+ is now behind apples smart hdr, and other chinese phon... moreIt is correct that Google's Night Sight can take a long time. I have measured that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 5 take up to approximately 6.5 or 7 seconds in Night Sight mode. It is also correct that Google's Night Sight often leads to blurry photos (tested with Pixel 3a) because Google uses an exposure time of up to 1s (!) per frame. This often makes it necessary to take the photo again, so you need to hold still again for 6-7 seconds. Often you can only get sharp results when you stop breathing. That's terrible.

Though, Google used to have a fast Night Sight mode. It is the HDR+ enhanced mode of the Pixel 3a. It's basically exactly the same thing as Night Sight, but it usually takes up to 2.5 seconds (instead of up to 7) and produces nearly always sharp results due to a maximum exposure time of 1/5s per frame. HDR+ enhanced usually produces better low light results than Night Sight. Only in a completely dark room Night Sight is better (only slightly better, if you edit the HDR+ enhanced raw file). It is a shame that Pixel 4/5 don't have HDR+ enhanced.

Also note that as far as I know, the iPhone 12 Pro Max night mode doesn't take longer than 1 second as far as I know.

Nick Tegrataker, 24 Apr 2021How about you come back here when Pixel stops taking consis... moreThe Google Nexus 5x in HDR+ On mode (not the default mode) still takes one of the best daylight photos, possibly still the best daylight camera on the market (no matter whether objects move). The Nexus 5x usually merges 8 raw files for each photo, which theoretically leads to a base Iso noise performance of a 4/3" type sensor (apart from the shadows). But it isn't just the daylight noise performance.
The Nexus jpgs have fantastic colors, the Pixel 3a can have more blown out highlights and has a much worse white balance than the Nexus. Nexus 5x sunsets have extremely realistic colors.
The Nexus also has a very sharp lens and its noise reduction looks neither aggressive nor artificial in good/average light conditions (noise reduction of Pixel 5 or Pixel 3 can be much more aggressive and artificial in good/average light conditions).
